Alisa Alering Hi Susan, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I'm hesitant to definitively state that any image in a story directly represents one thing. I really value hearing readers' takes, sometimes you all see things that I don't! That said, I tend to think of the weight of Sheila's rope as everything that's holding her back: anxiety and fear, yes, also poverty, lack of satisfying role models, suppressed desire, family obligations, and so on.
