Write. Write a lot. Yeah, it's not an original answer, but it is the best. Write often and write something you love. Allow yourself to be carried away and obsessed with your characters. Don't limit yourself, or your writing muscles won't grow. Best to try out things and edit them out later than to write the same thing over and over.
