Goodreads asked Scarlett Cole:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Scarlett Cole I once read that Nora Roberts said this (apologies to Nora if she didn't!):
"Every time I hear writers talk about 'the muse', I just want to bitch-slap them. It's a job. Do your job."

That stuck with me, not the bitch-slap part, because I'm too Canadian for that. But the part about it being your job. In other jobs, you don't get a choice. If you work on the cash register at Target, you can't say, "I don't feel like ringing through customers today. I'm just not feeling it."

So I apply the same mentality to myself. I force myself to sit down and write. By doing this, I can usually find my way back to being inspired. It might take me a couple of thousand words that hit the edit room floor later, but it's better than writing nothing.
