Goodreads asked Benjamin Ellefson:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Benjamin Ellefson Outline your ideas.

I always start a book with a one sentence idea. That becomes a bullet point list of events or characters in the book. As the list gets long, they get grouped into chapters.

Once I have a solid outline of every chapter and three or four things that will happen or will be revealed in that chapter, then I start the writing. From there, it just flows out.
