I've always found my best writing comes from sitting down and letting an initial idea spring to mind naturally. From there I'll let the idea grow organically as I write. As the idea grows, the direction of the story follows.
I quite often sit and watch films and TV shows and end up wondering why I didn't write something in that genre. I love a thousand different stories but the original one's I write will always be a million times more authentic (and hopefully more enjoyable) than trying to recreate something that already exists.
