A Goodreads user asked Al Stewart:

Dear Al, I have two questions for you. When I'm reading a book, my mind creates an image of the writer based on the characters I'm reading about. So, how often do your characters find your reflection in them, or that isn't the case at all? And how much do you think the success of a story depends on the likability of the characters?

Al Stewart Hey Shon,
Hmm, I'm not sure about your first question. Many of the characters in me and Claire's stories are based, if loosely, on real people and events. But of course in order to create believable characters , writers also draw from their own experiences and emotions. So probably a mix .
I've loved books where the MC was not at all likeable but perhaps this depends on the reader. For me, it's not necessary to like them :)
Thanks for the question !
