I'm not a fan of couples in fiction, not really. Most authors (myself included) struggle to show a realistic relationship. Who doesn't get annoyed at a newly formed couple exchanging awkward banter or endearments mere hours after meeting? Sacrificing themselves for this person they just met?
Keep in mind, this answer is from the perspective of a author and reader of post-apocalyptic fiction. When I have a couple in my books, it's to advance the story, not to complete/prop up a weakly-written character.
