“Therefore, as the disciples pray for the new promise of Jesus to be fulfilled, they do so on a day that is steeped in the salvation history of their people and in a place that is the city of David, the home of God’s temple. We might assume that themes of creation, Exodus, covenant, promised land, monarchy, provision, election, and exile are saturating their prayers this Day of Pentecost and giving shape to their expectations of God’s new thing.”
