What? The Ruby Book Club is an effort to form a technical book club. Each book will be related to Ruby, Rails, or we will apply a Ruby/Rails focus to a more general programming book. We will cover a book anywhere from 1 to 3 months, depending on its length, etc. You will be generally reading on your own. We can keep in touch and ask questions via each meetup page's comments/here between meetups.
Why? The purpose of our technical book club will be to read, study, learn from and discuss a chosen book with like-minded enthusiasts. These activities can further our understanding and appreciation of Ruby/Rails/other, as well as propel us forward in our careers. Many of us have book wish/to-read lists but could use a bit of outside influence to get going. Hopefully this can provide that extra motivation and support.
Who? Anyone in our meetup group with the desire can join, although space will be limited (at the in-person meetups) to ensure all attendees can participate in the discussion.
When? Monthly, for now. See Upcoming Meetups for exact dates and times.
What is expected? Ideally, you would be reading the chapters that are planned for the upcoming discussion meetup.
However, we can't expect you to read exactly everything, true: we're busy, get sick, etc. On the other hand, it's not fair to other attendees if you're there just to get others to tell you what's in the book. Please make a genuine attempt at reading so that we can keep the discussion substantive and relevant. As long as you make that effort, you can participate as little or as much as you are comfortable with.
You do not need to attend every session for a given book! Suppose month #1 covers chapters 1-5 and month #2 covers 6-10 of the same book. If you are just interested in the first segment, that's totally fine! Attend the meetings that you want to.
Also, if a whole book is chosen for a month, the attendees *might* select beforehand which chapters/topics might be most interesting for discussion, and it's up to you if you'd like to read the rest of the book.
