A challenge that tips its hat to the origins of the crime novel as well as celebrating all that's great about the genre.

Year Long Challenge - 1st January 2013 to 31st December 2013

8 Catergories - you can add your own bonus catergories if you wish (or swap out any you don't want to do).

Ex-Con - 1 book per catergory
Model Prisoner - 2 books per catergory
Lifer - 3 books per catergory

Elementary My Dear Watson - Of course we start with Sherlock Holmes. This can be any book where Sherlock appears as a character (so it's not restricted to those written by Arthur Conan Doyle)

True Crime - A book which is based on a real incident (can be fiction or non-fiction).
Watching the Detectives - The central character is a member of the police.
Outside The Law - The central character is a lawyer, private detective, criminal (i.e not a member of the police).
Come Up To The Lab - Central character is a doctor/medical examiner.
Things Ain't What They Used To Be Historical Crime (i.e a book that is not set in the present).
Crime in a Cold Climate - A book that is written by an author from/set in Scandinavia (Norway, Finland, Sweden).

Kattibrie | 102 comments Charlotte, are re-reads ok? I've already read everything Agatha Christie (well, except her romance novels but they don't count here anyway) for example but I'm in the process of re-reading her stuff (for the n-th time)...

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 66 comments Yes re-reads are fine. I'm embarressed to say that I've only read one Agatha Christie, but it was fantastic - And Then There Were None.

message 7: by Kattibrie (new)

Kattibrie | 102 comments Oh, And Then There Were None is really good! Nice choice :P (Although I personally prefer her novels featuring Hercule Poirot - you should try "Alibi" or "Evil under the Sun") Now you'll have a chance to catch up (and maybe get hooked on her books) :P

And about the re-reads - great. I could do all the categories then! :)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1052 comments I'm confused about the swapping out or creating our own bonus category. Do we not have to do all the categories? Can I create something different? Thanks! Looks like an interesting challenge.

message 10: by Charlotte (Buried in Books) (last edited Oct 21, 2012 09:46AM) (new)

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 66 comments Either - if you want to do all the existing catergories and create some bonus ones of your own then you can.

But if there are some catergories you don't want to do (or don't have the books to do them) and want to replace them with something else you can.

Does that make sense?

As long as you cover 8 different flavours!

Hi Jennifer,

In answer to your questions - Yes and Yes.

There's no restriction on book length.

I'm a believer in using a book for as many different challenges as it will fit in.

I hope you enjoy it.

Jennifer Oberth | 3 comments Thanks - I love this challenge and can't wait 'til the new year to get started!

Turtlecollector Dennis I am in and reserving my spot for my list. I will choose my books later, but I am a lifer! This is the genre I read the most in and I own almost all of the Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes books so those two categories will be easy. This year I have also discovered an obsession for scandinavian mysteries.
