Just finished reading these chapters. Olive's stories for children seem somewhat dark, in the fairy tale tradition. I'm amazed at how much Phillip has improved things for the potter. Olive's marriage is a strange one and appears to have been obtained due to financial circumstances. Yet it has brought her no peace or security financially. Now there may be no peace or security in the marriage itself according to the letter. Olive also seems to view her unborn child as some parasitic growth. There does not seem to be any excited or happiness associated with her pregnancy. While the dangers are real, wouldn't there some sort of excitement. Plus now we have the question of paternity, at least in the past or are they just saying your child because they are frustrated?

Kim (kimmr) | 317 comments Deborah, I think that there's a very real question of paternity (and maybe of maternity as well) raised by the Wellwoods' argument. Also, excitement and happiness associated with a pregnancy is only likely to happen when the pregnancy is actually wanted. In those pre-contraception days, yet another pregnancy would have been a cause for despair rather than celebration.

Lynnm | 3025 comments The story of Fludd annoys me. The tormented artist who in turn torments those around them, but because they are artistic geniuses, everyone is supposed to put up with it.

(Reminds me of The Moon and Sixpence by W. Somerset Maugham that I just read...the artist is tempermental and mean, but creates great art.)

One part of the story that I'm not enjoying. Too cliche.

Lynnm | 3025 comments Really behind because of correcting papers and family members visiting.

But will be able to post by mid-week.

I hate it when I get behind on my reading. :-(
