Lexi bit her lip nervously. Today was the day of the reaping...she crossed her arms and started straight ahead.
Patterson rushed into the square, quite late. He noticed Lexi but didn't dare to wave over at her. He assumed his place.
Lexi was nervous. Terrified that this year she might get reaped. She shook her head. Her name was only in there twice. 'But Luke's was only in there once and they still picked him...'
The announcer introduced the mentor(s) for district 7 and then went to the crystal ball with the male names in it before saying aloud for everyone to hear. "Patterson Holmes." they said and then allowed a short timeframe in which a volunteer had a chance to come forth.
Patterson's eyes widened and he walked forwards, completely and utterly stunned. He was led to the stage where he stood there, head bent and completely speechless.
Once the tribute was on the stage the announcer walked over to the crystal ball on the other side of the stage and pulled out a name and read it loud enough for the audience to hear. "Lexi Rivers." She said and then allowed a moment for a chance for a tribute to come forth.
Lexi looked up. No. It couldn't be. She took a shaky step forward 'no no no no no no no no no no...' she thought to herself as she walked towards the stage. This couldn't be happening. not after her brother had died last year...
When Lexi got up they looked at her. "Your family has odd luck, no?" they said, as a very ill-joke... they then turned to the audience. "Lexi Rivers and Patterson Holmes will be our tributes for District 7!"
Her heart was pounding as she looked out at the audience, she scanned the faces, trying to find her dad.
She saw her dad near the back of the crowd, a horrified expression on his face. She quickly looked away.
What was going to happen now?He lifted his eyes, squinting against the sun to see his family in the distance and all the boys of the district before him.
