Tiffany (ladyfalcon) | 41 comments I'm just curious... what do you guys like to write? I like to play around with high fantasy. What's your favorite genre?

It depends, I guess. I like to try different genres because I think I'd get pretty bored if I only stuck to one. The only thing that's consistent in the genres I explore is that for now I only write YA, but within YA I write some contemporary/urban fantasy, sci-fi, and realistic fiction mostly.

message 3: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (ladyfalcon) | 41 comments yeah, it is more fun to write YA anyway. I just cannot stand all the adult scenes in adult books

I read some adult books but typically I just find coming-of-age type stories more interesting. I can't really see myself writing about adults, but maybe that's because I haven't really experienced adulthood.

message 5: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 0 comments Adult books = bloodless zombie fiction

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

i like to write sci-fiction

message 7: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) | 3211 comments I write realistic fiction, and if I write novels they are always YA, but my short stories are sometimes adult because sometimes the stories just need to be and often that is what is going to sell in lit magazines.

Realistic fiction, urban fantasy, fiction, non-fiction, etc. I'll dabble in just about anything. I like YA, but I've kind of tried my fair share of adult books, to. Not that I've finished any, but. I find that every YA book I start to write ends up getting farther and farther away from the typical YA genre.

message 9: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (kylegalvin99) I tend to write a lot of urban fantasy and realistic fiction. I've experimented with horror, but uh . . . that didn't go too well.

I doubt it was that bad

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments Realistic fiction, fantasy, historical fiction.

This.^ I write in pretty much any genre that comes to mind.

Except erotica. Definitely not erotica.

Brigid ✩ | 11973 comments Mod
To be honest I kind of want to try writing erotica; my friends and I are planning to write an erotic novel about were-starfish ... just for the lulz. XD

message 15: by Mary (new)

Mary | 34 comments YA and fantasy. I love character development and world building. Eon and The Floating Islands were some really great ones that I was able to read.
I want to write something that will make someone go "Wow."

How can you have zombies without blood?

Tiffany wrote: "yeah, it is more fun to write YA anyway. I just cannot stand all the adult scenes in adult books"

Agreed. YA is like between kids and adult books x) Not too kiddish not too...adult-ish. And all the...stuff in adult books O_0
Anyways, YA!

message 18: by EJ (new)

EJ | 301 comments I usually write realistic fiction since my attempts at any other genre have gone down the drain, but it's still fun to try them out.

And about the whole YA thing, I tend to write about older teens as I myself get older, so I'm wondering if I'd write adult fiction when I too am an adult. The thought's kind of weird.

I feel like I'll probably stay in YA even when I'm older because the way adult books are marketed and generally written doesn't appeal to me at all.

I just wrote a whole 12-page essay about this. Haha. XD

message 22: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (booksteainsanity) | 955 comments Okay, so we're doing narratives in my writing class. Most people's stuff are about two pages long.

Mine? Four to six.

It's kind of awkward.

Woah, that's awesome!

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (Oceanwhisper) I know exactly how you feel Anastasia!

I write pretty much anything to do with YA really. I've never actually tried writing a novel with people as the main characters, but I have a plot carefully planned out for this! So yeah, I tend to write about animals and fantasy with dragons and things.

Yeah! It was fun to write a paper about something I really care about ... haha. Well, it was frustrating in some ways because I could have gone on and on about it forever. But, yeah. Mostly it was fun. :P

It's so frustrating! I was actually teased because it was four pages long yesterday!

I told them that they're just jealous. :/

message 27: by Hope (new)

Hope Might as well make a first post here.

I love to write horror and paranormal fiction. I'm really bad about coming up with brilliant ideas and never writing 'em down, though.

message 28: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Christine (kelly7bbz) | 2 comments Fantasy, of course :)

message 29: by Lila (new)

Lila Well... I'm not much of a writer but I'm a sucker for romance and when I do write, it's usually about love.

Mary | 34 comments Brandon wrote: "Fantasy, fairy tales, nonsensical (not pure nonsense...think Alice in Wonderland), and so on."

same here:D

Isaac | 8014 comments Tiffany wrote: "I'm just curious... what do you guys like to write? I like to play around with high fantasy. What's your favorite genre?"

Fantasy, crime, realistic usually though it's like about abuse or something, and romance.

message 32: by Kiernan (new)

Kiernan Malik (kiernann) I like to write about nonfiction and someday a historical fiction book like 'Between Shades of Gray'

message 33: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
I've tried to write dystopian fiction and fantasy but world building is hard for me.

message 34: by Lucy (new)

Lucy (loperdoper) | 11 comments Hmmm, I have a tendency to write slightly dystopic stories, normally with a little sci-fi mixed in, or maybe some (low/urban) fantasy.

I do however have a hankering to write a crime novel. Got the name picked out and everything.

message 35: by Poet in the Dark (new)

Poet in the Dark (poetinthedark) | 253 comments I write a lot of fantasy. I really enjoy it because there's so much you can do and focus on, and coming up with new things to put in a fantasy setting is just a lot of fun! I do like writing realistic fiction, but I've found that most of the time one or two fantasy elements creep into it. I have three stories (that I can think of) that are completely realistic.

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments Lav wrote: "I feel like I'll probably stay in YA even when I'm older because the way adult books are marketed and generally written doesn't appeal to me at all."

message 37: by EJ (new)

EJ | 301 comments Lav wrote: "I've tried to write dystopian fiction and fantasy but world building is hard for me."

Me too. My NaNo for 2011 was dystopian, but I later found out I stole half the idea from Divergent. In my defense, I had never heard of it at that point. I'm not good at planning that kind of stuff out, and I really like writing realistic fiction just because it focuses more on the characters and relationships, and all that good stuff.

message 38: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
I love fantasy and dystopian novels, but only when the characters feel real.

message 39: by Hope (new)

Hope Agreed, Lav.

message 40: by Isaac (new)

Isaac | 8014 comments I don't understand myself. I am seriously one of the most unromantic people you will ever meet yet I write mostly romance.

message 41: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 0 comments ^And it makes me feel stuff.
