David Lafferty (danteexplorer) There is so much out there, any recommendations for late 13th - early 14th century HF? I'm just finishing "Name of the Rose", thinking about "Pillars of the Earth".
thanks!

Until the Sun Falls is mid-13th-century Russia (Mongol Invasion).

Much of Doomsday Book takes place in mid-14th-century England (there is a modern frame, but the medieval stuff is much better than the modern plot).

Not sure of the dates of Ellis Peters' Cadfael mysteries, but they may be in the right time period.

Hazel West's On a Foreign Field: A Story of Loyalty and Brotherhood deals with William Wallace, who is early 14th-century, I think.

I'm sure there are many, many more titles, although my brain is refusing to divulge them. Is there a particular area of the world that interests you?

Thank you! Italy!

Diane S ☔ Read this not to long ago. It is an earlier time period than you mentioned, but it has the same kind of tone as The Name of the Rose. Illuminations: A Novel of Hildegard von Bingen, I thought this was very good and it is based on actual people.

C.P. Lesley (cplesley) | 585 comments David, If you like novels about Italy, you may like books by Sarah Dunant. I read The Birth of Venus, which is 100 years after your preferred period (set in 1494 Florence) and somewhat problematic, to boot. But I have heard from other GR readers that her other books are better.

The World, the Flesh and the Devil is also 14th-century, I’m pretty sure. Set in Avignon and Scotland. The author, Reay Tannahill, was a college chum of my mother's (!), although for books of hers, I much prefer The Seventh Son, about Richard III, and her nonfiction.
