@Kristin - Hmm...that makes me sad. I hope it's good. I've been wanting to read it because of the show, but then again I didn't build my hopes up too much since shows and books don't usually translate back and forth too well.
I had different experience. I read books first and I couldn't get into the show. Tempe was so annoying. :)Since I've read translations, and over here they tend to translate series in no particular order, I have no idea what I've read. :) I'm in.
Nairabell wrote: "I'm in for this. It's been sitting on my shelf for forever :)"That's me too. I keep looking at it sitting there on my shelf, might as well pick it up with the rest of you! :)
Mine looks like this:
The only book of hers I have read so far is
(apparently #14) and I really enjoyed it but there are definitely aspects of Tempe and her life in this book series that are different from the Tempe in the tv series.

I wonder how many different covers we'll end up with between us?
❀Tea❀ wrote: "Croatian version:
.I'm reading english one :)"
Me too. I don't think I like to read in Portuguese anymore!
*giggles*
Actually, that is not true. I prefer English versions, especially urban-fantasy titles, I still read translated versions, but not as much as I used to.
Ever since I started reading books (better say ebooks) in English, I can't stand reading translations. It doesn't help that they seems to get worse with time.Recently, I've read Croatian author and it was strange at first. I was thinking I need to find English version to understand it better. :)
Looking less and less like I'll have this one on time. Crossing my fingers that the two people in front of me are speed readers or you know...just don't pick up the book....

Looking forward to this one :D

I am really struggling with it. The story is interesting, but the constant tales, and historical figures involved is tiring... It was the same problem I had with
. Maybe if I didn't read that I would like this one more. But it seems that she discovered a reading formula, and only uses that one. Too bad, because she clearly had a big research to all those facts and figures... she could use that time and effort to do the book less dense

My book cover (from the library):

Thanks, Sonia! There are a few of us tag-teaming the questions on this one, but we certainly won't turn away help if you want to pitch in. Just pick a day.
:o)Not that anxious.. I'll have a whole week next March - that one I cannot wait.
And I'm not going to tell anybody except my PT (no need to do work-outs on the busy hours when I have the day free) when it is, so I can be all by myself (and Simba, off course)
I'm in. I have my copy from the library
. This will be a re-read for me. It's the only book I read of Reichs. Maybe it will interest me more the second time around!
I'm new to this group, and currently reading some other things, but I think I might pick this one up and try to keep up and join in your discussion :)
Thanks, Mary! ME TOO! Can't wait until it comes back... April :( Too far. Enjoying Clara thus far, but miss Donna and the Ponds still!
I read this a while ago and I well say the first book in the series is a little hard to get into but it is well worth it if only to get to the rest. I just finished book 8 or 9 and Kathy Reichs is quickly working her way up on my favorite authors list. The series gets really good around book 4 but I still enjoyed the first 3.
Questions and Comments for Chapters 1 - 61) First impressions of Dr. Temperance Brennan? Do you like her or dislike her? Has anyone seen the television show Bones, inspired by this series? If so, how would you compare Bones to Tempe?
2) How do you feel about the amount of French in the book so far? Is it distracting, or realistic given the Montreal setting?
3) Much of the praise this book has received from critics has been about how accurate it is, given that Kathy Reichs is herself a forensic anthropologist. What do you think of her attention to detail?
4) What do you think of Claudel? How did you feel about the way he dismissed Tempe's theory so quickly - and so angrily?
5) Will Tempe's sobriety be tested before the end of the book?
6) First impressions of Gabby? What do you think of her project? How do you think she managed to get in over her head? Will Tempe rescue her from whoever is trying to kill her?
7) Any clues or ideas as to the serial killer? Or is it too early? Could Gabby's project be related in any way?
8) What did you think of the first section overall? Are you hooked? Any thought not covered in the DQs?
Mindy wrote: "I read this a while ago and I well say the first book in the series is a little hard to get into but it is well worth it if only to get to the rest. I just finished book 8 or 9 and Kathy Reichs is ..."Good to know, Mindy - thanks!
Questions and Comments for Chapters 1 - 61) First impressions of Dr. Temperance Brennan? Do you like her or dislike her? Has anyone seen the television show Bones, inspired by this series? If so, how would you compare Bones to Tempe?
I think she's okay, but don't really know her very well yet (or remember much about her or the book, since this is a re-read!). It definitely takes a certain type of person to be able to do the job that she does.....and that person is NOT me!! I have never seen Bones and don't know if I'm really interested.
2) How do you feel about the amount of French in the book so far? Is it distracting, or realistic given the Montreal setting?
IT's realistic given the setting, and I took French in high school so it's not too distracting for me.
3) Much of the praise this book has received from critics has been about how accurate it is, given that Kathy Reichs is herself a forensic anthropologist. What do you think of her attention to detail?
It's a bit too detailed for me. I kind of skim over the parts that go into too much detail.
4) What do you think of Claudel? How did you feel about the way he dismissed Tempe's theory so quickly - and so angrily?
My first impression is that I don't like him.
5) Will Tempe's sobriety be tested before the end of the book?
It's definitely seems that way. There's already been a couple of mentions about how badly she wants a drink.
6) First impressions of Gabby? What do you think of her project? How do you think she managed to get in over her head? Will Tempe rescue her from whoever is trying to kill her?
From Tempe's perspective she's acting really strange. The two seem really different to be such good friends. Her project seems kind of dangerous.
7) Any clues or ideas as to the serial killer? Or is it too early? Could Gabby's project be related in any way?
I think it's too early to tell. I think Gabby's project is related.
8) What did you think of the first section overall? Are you hooked? Any thought not covered in the DQs?
So far it's been a quick read and keeping me interested enough to continue reading. I read this back in 2004 and don't remember anything! It's like a brand new read for me!
Laura's Answers and Comments for Chapters 1 - 61) First impressions of Dr. Temperance Brennan? Do you like her or dislike her? Has anyone seen the television show Bones, inspired by this series? If so, how would you compare Bones to Tempe?
I like her so far. She seems to be a bit moody, but it is understandable given all of the things we know about her life so far. I have only ever seen a few minutes of the TV show so I can't really compare the two.
2) How do you feel about the amount of French in the book so far? Is it distracting, or realistic given the Montreal setting?
I think it is realistic, but also a bit distracting because I don't know what some of it means and there hasn't been much explanation. You can figure out a lot of it though through context clues.
3) Much of the praise this book has received from critics has been about how accurate it is, given that Kathy Reichs is herself a forensic anthropologist. What do you think of her attention to detail?
I found myself cringing at her description of a few things. I think it is great that it is so detail oriented and accurate. It makes me happy that I can actually feel like I am reading a book that could be true.
4) What do you think of Claudel? How did you feel about the way he dismissed Tempe's theory so quickly - and so angrily?
He seems to be a bit of a chauvinist. I don't like him at the moment, but I bet he will grow on me.
5) Will Tempe's sobriety be tested before the end of the book?
I doubt it, but then why would the author bring it up? Maybe just to show her weakness? Hmm....
6) First impressions of Gabby? What do you think of her project? How do you think she managed to get in over her head? Will Tempe rescue her from whoever is trying to kill her?
I think she is hiding something about the killings. I do like her though, she seems to be a good friend from what Tempe has described. I am wondering if this investigation into hookers has gotten her into some trouble. I hope Tempe is able to save her.
7) Any clues or ideas as to the serial killer? Or is it too early? Could Gabby's project be related in any way?
I think it has something to do with the hookers, but I think it is a bit too early to predict who the killer is.
8) What did you think of the first section overall? Are you hooked? Any thought not covered in the DQs?
I really liked the first section, there is a lot to think about. I find myself wondering about the TV show and whether or not I would like it. I am just not sure.
I actually think I've read this one. Some things sound familiar, but I can't remember everything that happens.Questions and Comments for Chapters 1 - 6
1) First impressions of Dr. Temperance Brennan? Do you like her or dislike her? Has anyone seen the television show Bones, inspired by this series? If so, how would you compare Bones to Tempe?
I like book Tempe. Probably because I've read book before TV show was aired. TV Tempe was too annoying for my taste. I did like show (at first) and probably would like Bones more if I didn't know about book-show connection.
2) How do you feel about the amount of French in the book so far? Is it distracting, or realistic given the Montreal setting?
It's little distracting since I don't know French, so I have to use dictionary. :) But it gives us real feeling of Montreal.
3) Much of the praise this book has received from critics has been about how accurate it is, given that Kathy Reichs is herself a forensic anthropologist. What do you think of her attention to detail?
I like it. Since I went through most of Kay Scarpetta series (she is medical examiner), this doesn't sound so terrible. Anyway, I believe my brain isn't capable of imaging it as terrible as it really is (watching it on TV show was so much worse :) ).
4) What do you think of Claudel? How did you feel about the way he dismissed Tempe's theory so quickly - and so angrily?
I can't answer this. Since I've read her books before, I remember him. I don't remember my first impression of him, but I think he doesn't change that much. You just get used to him as he is.
5) Will Tempe's sobriety be tested before the end of the book?
No.
6) First impressions of Gabby? What do you think of her project? How do you think she managed to get in over her head? Will Tempe rescue her from whoever is trying to kill her?
Again, I remember some things from before, but not everything. I think she's being stalked by murderer. And maybe end up on Tempe's table?
7) Any clues or ideas as to the serial killer? Or is it too early? Could Gabby's project be related in any way?
It's to early for me to figure out who's the killer, but there is definitely connection with Gabby's project.
8) What did you think of the first section overall? Are you hooked? Any thought not covered in the DQs?
I'm hooked. To be honest, I'm having little trouble stopping after 6 chapters.
@ Nancy2 - I can see that knowing some French would really help. :-) I'm listening to the audio and Barbara Rosenblat has perfect pronunciation of everything French, so it really helps.
3 - Yes, I agree with you, and I had to force myself not to skim. Some parts were too graphic for me, to be honest.
4 - Ditto! Heh.
6 - Definitely a dangerous project. I wonder who she's running from and how she got involved with him.
8 - I love books like that! I have a terrible memory, so any reread is pretty much a brand new experience for me.
@ Laura1 - My sister is a big fan of the show, so I've seen a few episodes. Bones (that's what they call Temperance in the TV show) seems like someone who has trouble communicating with people, or expressing her emotions, almost comically so. The show has a lot of humor in it, and is very light, and is almost nothing like the book so far.
2 - Good point. The audiobook helps with the pronunciation, but I still don't know what it means...
3 - Love your answer, especially the last part. I didn't like the more graphic descriptions, and they really disturbed me. This isn't really the type of book I would seek out. But I do appreciate the accuracy.
5 - Exactly. I wonder if the stress of this case will get to her and she'll give in.
6 - She's definitely hiding something. I wonder what she's gotten herself into, and how bad it is.
8 - The show is much more like CSI, but funnier and lighter, and probably a lot less accurate than this book. I know a lot of fans of the show (including my sister), but some have said the quality has dipped in the last couple of seasons.
@ ❀Tea❀1 - Yes, show Tempe always irritated me, too. My sister is a big fan and tried to get me into Bones multiple times, but I could never really stand it. I never really bought the chemistry between Bones and Booth (is that his name?), either.
2 - Yes, good point. Without it, it wouldn't be realistic. But it is distracting at times.
4 - He's so infuriating. Reminds me of a few jerks I've worked with over the years.
6 - Oh, jeez. I hope not!
7 - Yes, I think so too.
8 - Glad you're hooked! I'm having a bit of trouble with this one, probably because the narrator pauses after each sentence, stretching it out. I like the story so far, though.
Questions and Comments for Chapters 1 - 61) First impressions of Dr. Temperance Brennan? Do you like her or dislike her? Has anyone seen the television show Bones, inspired by this series? If so, how would you compare Bones to Tempe?
I watch the show Bones. And I love it. The character in the book is nothing like the one in the show. Her character in the book is more likeable.
2) How do you feel about the amount of French in the book so far? Is it distracting, or realistic given the Montreal setting?
I would like it better if I knew French. And I don't mind it when it is immediately translated in the book. But when it isn't, I am like- uggh- what are they saying?
3) Much of the praise this book has received from critics has been about how accurate it is, given that Kathy Reichs is herself a forensic anthropologist. What do you think of her attention to detail?
I get that details help make it authentic, but when it gets too gory, I just skip right over it. I have to be able to sleep at night, thank you.
4) What do you think of Claudel? How did you feel about the way he dismissed Tempe's theory so quickly - and so angrily?
He is typical arrogant know-it-all.
5) Will Tempe's sobriety be tested before the end of the book?
Maybe. She is a bit focused on it.
6) First impressions of Gabby? What do you think of her project? How do you think she managed to get in over her head? Will Tempe rescue her from whoever is trying to kill her?
Whatever is going on with Gabby will be important. Not sure if it ties into the case that Tempe is working on. That seems a bit too easy, but maybe so.
7) Any clues or ideas as to the serial killer? Or is it too early? Could Gabby's project be related in any way?
Not enough bad guys in the story to make a guess.
8) What did you think of the first section overall? Are you hooked? Any thought not covered in the DQs?
I like the story, seems like it will be an easy read.
Pictures! I'm putting them under a spoiler tag, because there are a few largish pictures under here of Montréal and various places and areas mentioned in the book (no actual spoilers). @ Courtney1 - I agree. I could never relate to Emily Deschanel's character. In the book, she seems more real.
2 - Hehe, yes, I know! Most of the time, you can guess what they are saying, but sometimes you have no clue!
3 - A few parts have made me a bit queasy, I have to say.
6 - Yes, it might be too easy to have it all come together like that. But you're right, Gabby's project will be really important.
@ Kristin
1 - Ah, good point. I don't see Bones standing up to people very well. I like how complex Tempe seems to be in the book. In the show, Bones seemed to be very 2-dimensional, but I only saw a few episodes.
3 - Neither would I. I do like that Kathy Reichs has first-hand experience with this subject, but sometimes I think she goes a bit far with her descriptions.
4 - That would be interesting.
5 - Good point!
8 - It's a little slow for me, too. I'm hoping it picks up a little soon.
Mary wrote: "@ Laura1 - My sister is a big fan of the show, so I've seen a few episodes. Bones (that's what they call Temperance in the TV show) seems like someone who has trouble communicating with people, o..."
My boyfriend said the show is pretty good, he used to watch it. I am going to have to netflix it. I like shows like that but I get bored with them quickly. There are just too many CSI type shows out there.
Laura's Questions Chapters 7-129. Hmm.. So Gabby is being stalked by a guy asking her creepy questions. Do you think he is the killer or just someone who is a stalker? I have a bad feeling about Gabby. Do you think it is wise for Gabby to be blending in with prostitutes for research? Would you be willing to go that far for research?
10. Impression so far of Andrew Ryan? I don't know much about the TV show, but it sounds like Mr. Ryan is going to play a large role in this book. It sounds like he is at least going to be fair to Tempe. Thoughts?
11. What did you think of the old timers at the convenience store? I was surprised at their mistake in not talking to them at first and that Tempe was the one to actually go up and start the conversation. Do you think that the old timers and the clerk knew more than they were telling? It seemed like the old timers were giving each other telling looks.
12. What did you think of Jean-Marc's apartment? It sure seems like he could be the killer. All of the newspaper clippings were creepy. I can't believe he was there the whole time. Do you think Claudel is so wrapped up in the fact that Tempe has all of these ideas that he is getting sloppy in his job? Should he have known that Jean-Marc was there all along?
13. What did you think of the chase scene? Were you surprised that Claudel assisted Tempe? I thought for sure she was more seriously injured when they talked about her neck popping. Would you have chased after the guy?
14. Wow, the guy had a picture of Tempe with a circled X. Any predictions on what it means?
15. It seems like no one is taking anything seriously. What do you think about everything so far? Is Tempe just grasping at straws or do you think she is the only smart one? It seems like no one else really thinks Jean-Marc is involved. Thoughts?
Questions and Comments for Chapters 1 - 61) First impressions of Dr. Temperance Brennan? Do you like her or dislike her? Has anyone seen the television show Bones, inspired by this series? If so, how would you compare Bones to Tempe?
Bones is still one of my fav shows so I was afraid about the similarities, and if I would be able to not compare the two. There wasn’t need to worry. Tempe and Bones are so unlike each other that it looks like a completely different type of book with the main character having the same name.
Just one note. I like Tempe’s feelings and struggles with the violence of the deaths. The same way that Bones lack of social skills and robotic feelings appeals to me, but she has Booth to compensate that behavior. That main difference is priceless to me.
By the way, WHERE IS MY BOOTH?????????
2) How do you feel about the amount of French in the book so far? Is it distracting, or realistic given the Montreal setting?
My sister has a friend from Montreal, and even if he talked perfect English with us, he switched to French when talking to his mother – and not the “regular” French, so I believe that gives a realistic touch to the book. It’s Montreal, not Toronto, so we expect they talk in French
3) Much of the praise this book has received from critics has been about how accurate it is, given that Kathy Reichs is herself a forensic anthropologist. What do you think of her attention to detail?
I was expecting that because of Bones. And so far I’m liking it a lot!
4) What do you think of Claudel? How did you feel about the way he dismissed Tempe's theory so quickly - and so angrily?
She’s American, He’s Canadian, isn’t that normal? *just kidding* Portuguese and Spanish are like that too, so I hope I didn’t offend anyone. Anyway, he’s a cop, she’s not. And she took him to the morgue, something he doesn’t like, maybe that’s the reason for the antagonism?
5) Will Tempe's sobriety be tested before the end of the book?
Maybe. Specially because all of the references of her addiction in the first 6 chapters
6) First impressions of Gabby? What do you think of her project? How do you think she managed to get in over her head? Will Tempe rescue her from whoever is trying to kill her?
Her project seems fascinating on the anthropologic side, but, it can mean trouble for her. I think the trouble she is is related to the project, maybe she touched some horn’s nest
7) Any clues or ideas as to the serial killer? Or is it too early? Could Gabby's project be related in any way?
I don’t discard that option, but it will be pretty obvious in the reader’s point of view. Too soon to tell
8) What did you think of the first section overall? Are you hooked? Any thought not covered in the DQs?
I’m so hooked that I was glad I was so sleepy last night or I would read it all. I’m going to try very much not to do it today, but after doing my section DQ’s I would not make any promises :o)

But her investigation is about to place those closest to her -- her best friend and her own daughter -- in mortal danger...
