Addy | 1944 comments I loved The Traveling Vampire. It was pretty awesome, especially the ending. That said, could anyone recommend another Laymon like this one?

Of the few Laymon novels I have read so far none compare to the traveling vampire show. The Stake is probably the closest, it has one part that is pretty brutal but it is still a good book and it is written a lot like the traveling vampire show.

I also liked Dark Mountain quit a bit.

message 4: by Char (new)

Char I can say that I didn't really enjoy Funland very much.

message 5: by Addy (new)

Addy | 1944 comments Thanks. I will add them to my tbr list, except for Funland. I will take ur word on that one Charlene. I haven't seen good reviews for that one anyway.

I have heard a lot of people say they didnt like funland and never once heard anyone say it is good.

Addy | 1944 comments Have u read it? Did u think it was good?

message 8: by 11811 (Eleven) (new)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 267 comments I had heard good things about Funland and its been on my short list TBR. Maybe I've been hearing things from the wrong people.

Vampire Show is my favorite I think with Night in the Lonesome October running a close second. I read library copies of each then bought both just for the sake of owning them.

Laymon has an amazing ability to write on and on about nothing in particular yet somehow keep me glued to the pages. He is king in that regard. He's all like "Plot? Fuck the plot. I'm just gonna write about a bunch of shit that happens until I hit at least 300 pages and then I'll start my next book. And everyone will love me for it."

He's in a league of his own.

If you thought Vampire Show was a bunch of randomness with a plot that seems like it will never unfold, check out Lonesome October. So random. So much fun.

I'll move The Stake ahead of Funland. I'm about due for another Laymon read.

message 9: by Addy (new)

Addy | 1944 comments Thanks 11811! I just may give that one a try. I don't mind randomness as long as if at some point he ties it all together. Speaking of randomness, House of Leaves might suit you. I could never finish that one...lol.

LOL 11811! Your post was killing me! I have The Traveling Vampire Show but haven't gotten to it yet.
I also added The Stake to my TBR. I added Lonesome Night as well, because we seem to have similar tastes. In which case, I'm pretty sure you will not be impressed with Funland at all.

I have not read funland, I heard a few people say it wasnt very good so I have been avoiding it. I may read it someday though, I think I have night in lonesome october but I would have to check.

message 13: by William (new)

William (wmcc) My favourite is One Rainy Night, but It's also the first Laymon book i read,so that probably has something to do with it.I also really liked "The Stake" and the first two "Beast House" books.I'll need to get to "Travelling Vampire show" after all the great reviews here.

House of Leaves is also on my short list but I'm afraid to start it because of all the mixed reviews. Some people seem to think it deserves 1 star and 5 stars simultaneously and I can't get my head around that right now.

3rd Beast House book may be my favorite in the series. Worth checking out. Midnight Tour I think it was called?

Me and cate are going to be doing a buddy read on midnight tour sometime in the next couple weeks if anyone wants to join us.

Ok finaly home from work. I checked and I do indeed have Night in the Lonesome October so I bumped it up to the second from the top of my laymon tbr right after the midnight tour. Of course that means nothing since planning what I want to read any sooner than about 5 minutes before I start it is useless and subject to change.

message 18: by 11811 (Eleven) (new)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 267 comments Agreed. I often add a book to currently reading, then a few minutes later start something else. I'm neurotic like that.

Char HA! Glad I'm not the only one. :)

I have that one. Havn't read it yet though.

Rob | 6 comments Great and under-appreciated author. Ive read all his books and he only had a small few that I didn't enjoy.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Laymon is my all time favourite author. I've read everything he has written apart from A Writer's Tale which I will be starting soon.

message 25: by Addy (new)

Addy | 1944 comments I also have Among the Missing. Haven't read it yet.

Char I bought it, so I will read it at some point. :)
Thanks, Addy!

message 28: by Robert Krone (new)

Robert Krone | 157 comments I have read a few Laymon books and have enjoyed them all (My first read of his was Blood Games). I actually have no idea how I discovered him. I am thinking I randomly discovered a book of his at the store on base when I was in the Army or I got one from the massive amount of books sent to where I was at when in Iraq in 2004.

I do know I was in the Army at the time though as I am pretty sure I didn't discover him when I was in High School since I didn't really read horror at that time. I spent a lot of time at library in HS, but it was more in the fantasy and science fiction sections. Another reason is that I didn't even discover he was dead until discovering Cemetery Dance. When I found that out I realized that he had been dead by the time I discovered his work. I haven't been feeling rushed to read all his books because I know there will never be a new one to look forward to purchasing on release day :(

Addy | 1944 comments Has anybody read Quake? I ran into it at a used book store for 5 bucks but didn't want to spend that much, esp if I didn't like it.

Kate | 1106 comments Mod
I have Addy, it was quite a long time ago though.
I remember enjoying it.
You never know it might come out cheaper in ebook at some point. I've got a few lendable laymon, if you see anything you like on my lend shelf let me know.

message 31: by Addy (new)

Addy | 1944 comments I saw Quake in your loanable books I think. How did u get it? Unless I was looking at a different list?

message 32: by Kate (new)

Kate | 1106 comments Mod
Addy, it's not on ebook yet but they've been releasing more of his books on a format that is lendable and much cheaper. Will have to wait to get it. :)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 267 comments Even if you didn't read this month's book, the Laymon group read on HA is worth lurking. It's as much about Laymon as it is the particular novel. Very entertaining.

You have to know who Laymon is and what he does to understand his books in the first place. People are going apeshit over there, lol.

I've never seen anything like it in a group read on HA. It amuses me intensely but I'm still glad to sit this one out on the sidelines and simply observe. This may be my favorite group read so far and I didn't even read the book.

Laymon is the most polarizing of all authors so far in an HA group read. I never would have guessed.
