Here we go with the second Grand Slam of the year.

What a tough half of the draw, with Novak, Nadal and Murray and Ferrer.

That is a much tougher half then Federer's half !

message 2: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessical1961) Are we talking books or tennis here? Books I am familiar with. Tennis not so much. Not one of my preferred sports.

I'm with you. Very excited about the French Open. Been up since 7am EST watching Federer play. Missed the first two hours though (ESPN coverage started at 5am in the US). Who played earlier?

IN the UK

I watch the tennis on Eurosport, when I am not on the court playing, or sadly working !

Some good matches coming, especially on the men's top half.

Already a few top ladies seeds out

message 6: by HKelleyB (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 54 comments Yes, I believe 3 top ladies seeds are out. Halep was one. Don't remember the others.

But, Sam Stosur (AUS) crushed her opponent! And, Maria Sharapova(RUS) won (even with a fever).

Groovy Lee Thanks for telling me about this thread, Sean.

Won't be able to see the matches until Saturday. Can someone name the top ladies seeds that are out? And are Monfils, Serena, and Stephens still in it?

message 11: by HKelleyB (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 54 comments Top ladies seeds ousted: V.Williams (15), Sararova (13), Radwanska (14), Halep (3)-I think that's right, so far.

Sloane Stephens beat Venus Williams (15) (1st round);Stephens plays the second round today.

Serena Williams beat Andrea Hlavackova (1st round); S.Williams plays the second round today.

Gael Monfils made it into the third round in singles and the second round in doubles.

Today Julie Goerges beat Caroline Wozniacki, another seed out.

Though cannot see anyone winning the ladies other than Serena Williams ot Maria Sharapova.

Biggest ladies was Halep.

Julia Goerges is a talented player and former top 20 player, who has been injured.

message 13: by HKelleyB (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 54 comments Woz was outplayed today. I'd never seen/noticed Goerges, until today.

How about that Schiavone! I love to watch her play. She has such a never-give-up attitude.

Groovy, too busy playing for three sets last night, did not watch much, today kept up with the scores, while working !

message 22: by Marian (new)

Marian | 462 comments I saw that Sean, about Roger Federer and the kid taking the selfie with him? They say he and his father were banned from the French Open for this season..or something like that anyway.

message 23: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Thanks, Sean, I appreciate the updates!

And yeah, I saw the young guy just run up to Federer and tried to take a selfie. Federer was not happy about it, either. The teen and his father are banned the entire season.

I don't understand why the security guards just took their time coming to Federer's aid. Instead of a selfie, it could have been someone with intentions of hurting him.

message 24: by Sean, Moderator (new)

Sean Peters (A Good Thriller) | 10593 comments Mod

message 25: by Marian (new)

Marian | 462 comments It was all over the news Sean..on CNN I think I read it.

message 26: by HKelleyB (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 54 comments After what happened to Monica Seles almost 20 years ago (stabbed on tennis court in Germany) you would think there would be better security at every tennis arena.

Roger had a look that basically said 'WTF' as he stood there with the kid right next to him, waiting for security, as the kid took two selfies with him.

Un-be-livable!

message 27: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee You could tell he was really upset about it. He looked over at security at one point with his hands up like, 'why are you just standing there?', then he kept trying to push the young guy away from him. It was sad.

But hopefully, security is more alert and ready to take action. They should have fired them and hired some better ones.

Just been watching the miracle winner Gael Monfils, who was 2 games from loosing the match in the fourth set, was 4-1 in games and 2-1 down and won.

4-6 , 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 against the great clay court player Pablo Cuevas.

Lots of French in the last sixteen, great matches coming up in the next few days.

R. Federer V G. Monfils

J W Tsonga v T.Berdych

S.Wawrinka V G. Simon

Tomorrow Andy Murray, 3rd round match against N.Kyrios.

One of the favourites of the ladies out today, the most successful female player this year, with the most wins this year C.Suarez Navarro out !

Great last sixteen match in the ladies

L.Safarova v M.Sharapova.

message 29: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee OH--MY--GOD! Wish I could have seen those matches. I'm so proud of Monfils, but I think tomorrow may be his last day coming up against Federer:(

To me, Tsonga V Berdych--tough to call.

You're right, some great matches for the weekend. Can't wait!

message 30: by Sean, Moderator (new)

Sean Peters (A Good Thriller) | 10593 comments Mod

message 31: by HKelleyB (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 54 comments Sean:

Indeed a great summary. You sound like you are a betting man!

message 32: by Sean, Moderator (new)

Sean Peters (A Good Thriller) | 10593 comments Mod
No never bet !

Just watch too much tennis !!

One right so far, S. Williams just beats V.Azernanka,

from 3-6 2-4 down to win 3-6 6-4 6-2 to play S. Stephens.

message 33: by HKelleyB (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 54 comments Serena made me so nervous I had to turn away; but I couldn't stay away. I saw her comeback. Azeranka played well. I thought she had the match, and then Serena shifted into a whole new gear. WOW.

I'm looking forward to the Serena Williams vs. Sloane Stephens match on Monday. I just hope they both bring their 'A' games.

message 34: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Sean, I love your summary, too. You picked just about all of my favorites to win. I'm just hoping Stephens could maybe surprise us with a win. She passed Serena as my favorite. But this may be Serena's last French Open, so if she wins, good. She's showing that she still got it.

I'm probably the only one here to say this but: I'm rooting for Monfils on Monday:)

Pironkova seemed so tired, even McEnroe called her lost before it was over. This is fun, everyone!

message 35: by Sean, Moderator (new)

Sean Peters (A Good Thriller) | 10593 comments Mod
No, Serena will play next year, as will Venus, as they said they will play in Rio next year, same for R. Federer.

message 36: by HKelleyB (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 54 comments I love Roger, yet I am rooting for Monfils on Monday, too. I love to watch him play. He is not so graceful, but he is scrappy! Energetic. Entertaining. A joy to watch.

So far doing alright.

Got A.Ivanovic right

Got E ,Sviolina right.

Not looking good for Berdych, who is loosing badly.

Just spent two hours playing doubles against two top former British players, guests at the cub today.

Played against Danny Sapford and Luke Milligan and Ross Hutchins, played well and was pleased.

Got K.Nishikori right

Got S.Wawrinka right

Got T. Berdych wrong, who lost to J W Tsonga.

message 39: by HKelleyB (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 54 comments You've got a good average, so far.

I can't wait to see the continuation of the Monfils vs. Federer match tomorrow. It should be a good match. It will probably go all five sets since it already is a set a piece.

message 40: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee You're calling it good, Sean. I figured the match between Berdych and Tsonga would be a close one.

I feel the same way about Monfils. He's energetic, entertaining, and cute. A very good player. I think one day, he'll be right up there with Federer, Nadal, Murray, and Djokovich. I said one day:)

Can someone tell me if Sarapova is still in? I missed that.

message 41: by HKelleyB (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 54 comments Sarapova plays Sharapova first match tomorrow morning.

As soon as Monfils concentrates on playing singles and reduces his doubles play, he will rise in the rankings.

message 42: by Sean, Moderator (last edited Jun 01, 2015 03:30AM) (new)

Sean Peters (A Good Thriller) | 10593 comments Mod
Monfils plays very little doubles, just prone to so many injuries.

Has a great two sets yesterday for two hours with two former top British doubles players Danny Sapford, and Luke Milligan(Ross Hutchins as well, but he talked not played)

Drew in mixed doubles with Danny Sapford 10-10 points all, but beat Luke Milligan 12-10, with two of our lady members.

Very pleased how I played.

Safarova v Sharapova will be close, but Sharapova has a massive winning record against her, (11-1 I think).

But I do like Safarova game (both same age 28 years old)

message 43: by HKelleyB (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 54 comments Did you go pro? Were you ever ranked? Or, do you just play for fun? I played in college, for fun. I liked it, but it was hard on my elbow. So, I didn't play as much as I would have liked to.

I like Safarova since Sharapova does have that cold!
