I didn't see a topic yet for this one and thought I'd start it. This book is giving, as the title states, the origin story of Druss. He was a mythic, and pretty interesting (imo) character in the first book in the series, and I'm looking forward to reading how he started. Right now it is kind of reminding me of the previous books - seems like most of our heroes stories start with an attacked village :)

I'm two behind. Report writing at the moment, well I'm not as I'm playing here rather than starting!
I am glad that Druss has found some friends/guidance - its good to see where 'the code' came from - and without meeting those supporting characters, he may very well have turned into his grandfather.
I liked to see where the code came from as well. I also liked to read about where Druss the legend came from. However I have found the series to be a little bit disconcerting jumping around so much. I just get to like a character and then we move in time and place either forward or back to somewhere completely different and it takes a while to get into again. I suppose I will get used to it, it is nice to hear stories that created legends and meet the characters though.
I agree about the jumping around. I think if I knew someone that was going to begin reading the series, I'd recommend doing the chronological order instead. I had no idea about the time jumps until I got confused when it happened.
I've always Gemmell's work and this book was no different. it is high adventure with lots of twists for Druss who is single-minded in rescuing Rowena. Enjoyed the read.
I'm really liking seeing Druss in his initial state. He's still extremely tough, but has things to learn. I was also interested in the possessed axe. I'll be curious to see if something else happens in relation to that. It DID seem to help heal him the one time, and it protects him, and we know from past books it doesn't make him evil. So...it'll be interesting to see!
I've just finished. It was certainly interesting to see where and how Druss started. He was lucky to meet some friends that helped shape him or he would've become his grandfather. I'm not sure that I agree that he was single-minded in his search for Rowena as he took seven years and had numerous adventures. Funny coincidence, I was just thinking that if I ever do a reread, I'm doing it in chronological order!
The way this was written made me wonder if it was serialized at some point first - each story was pretty self-contained.
