I return often to non-fiction book "Where the Sky Began: Land of the Tallgrass Praire" by John Madson. Published in 1982, it remains refreshing today because of Madson's ability to put the science of grasslands into painterly prose. Particularly memorable to me are Madson's phrases "the lawns of God" and "the Far Gardens, " referring to The Plains' eastern and western grasslands, respectively. Looking for just one book that describes the original American prairie? This is it.
