Donna and I were chatting some time back about the volunteer nominations vs. open nominations and we thought we'd try open nominations and see how it works If we like it, then we have something else to mix it up with.... So, here we go. I put together a few rules so let's see how this works

1. We'll do a first vote of the top 10 or 12 nominated and seconded books followed by a second vote of the top 4 or 5.
2. One Nomination and Two Seconds per person (we'll see how this goes ...)
3. No books by authors selected within the past 12 months. The list is here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
4. Must be available as an ebook
5. No nominating your own book
6. Book must be fantasy but I'm open to reasonable challenges on books that may not belong ...

So, got it? Good. Let's see what comes out of this.

Nominated and Seconded
Seventh Son by Orson Scott Card
The Black Company by Glen Cook
Hard Magic by Larry Correia
The Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts
Lamentation by Ken Scholes
The Crystal Shard by R.A. Salvatore
Arrows of the Queen by Mercedes Lackey
Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly

Nominated
Morrigan's Harvest by Kaiya Hart
The Dark Griffin by K.J. Taylor
An Empire Unacquainted with Defeat by Glen Cook

I'll second Seventh Son even though I know a lot of people's hatred for Orson Scott Card.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 0 comments The Dark Griffin by K.J. Taylor The Dark Griffin by K.J. Taylor - nominating. It is one that veers into darker anti-hero stuff past the somewhat misleading free sample (first few pages of sample came close to being a Mutual of Omaha nature special on griffins).

message 6: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnahr) I'll nominate Hard Magic by Larry Correia. Very fun book.

message 7: by Charles (last edited Mar 01, 2013 08:29PM) (new)

Charles (nogdog) I'll nominate The Black Company by Glen Cook, since my brother has been telling me for years I should read it, but never seem to have gotten around to it.
The Black Company The First Novel of 'The Chronicles of The Black Company' by Glen Cook

I nominate Lamentation by Ken Scholes

Lamentation (Psalms of Isaak, #1) by Ken Scholes

I'll nominate The Crystal Shard by R.A. Salvatore since the series is finally out in ebook format, and audible is working on recording the series.

message 12: by Clay (new)

Clay | 126 comments Hmmm. Guessed I missed a post some where. Is there a theme for the June fantasy read?

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

No theme. Instead of having a member nominate books for one of the selections, we're trying out something different and having open nominations for one and a theme for the other ....

message 15: by Charles (last edited Mar 02, 2013 11:18AM) (new)

Charles (nogdog) I'll go ahead and second "Lamentation", since I know I'll still have another in my back pocket if something that really catches my interest comes along. (It looks like it might be good, but the reviews are kind of all over the place -- but what the heck, there's only one way to find out. :-) )

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm breaking my own guidelines and making another nomination .... An Empire Unacquainted with Defeat by Glen Cook

Hmmm...that will split the Glen Cook votes -- a clever ploy on your part? ;-)

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm actually more dense than clever. I picked up 'Empire Unacquainted' yesterday and thought it would be fun to throw into the ring - and didn't even notice he already has a book on the list ... :)

Matt (mattimusprimed) | 3 comments Ill Second The Crystal Shard an old colleague told me to read it a while back and i never got round to it...

(PS. Hope i got this vote/seconding thing right... i'm new to the group)

message 20: by Clay (last edited Mar 05, 2013 06:44AM) (new)

Clay | 126 comments I am going to nominate (once again) The Arrows of the Queen by Mercedes Lackey. The first of the Valdemar Series.
Arrows of the Queen (Heralds of Valdemar, #1) by Mercedes Lackey

message 21: by Carro (new)

Carro | 47 comments I'm nominating Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly. Absolutely gripping in the way it handles people, places, dragons and the nature of magic.

message 22: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnahr) I'll second The Arrows of the Queen.

message 23: by Chai and Pakoras (new)

Chai and Pakoras (chaiandpakoras) | 12 comments I'll second Hard Magic because I already own it and think it's due for a re-read :)

My second choice, if Hard Magic doesn't get enough votes, would be Dragonsbane.

OK. I'm calling it. This is a great list, boys and girls.
