Getting this group back up and running; we'll read one book a month and hopefully have some good discussions about it.

My first pick is THE BANKS OF CERTAIN RIVERS by Jon Harrison, a debut novel that James Frey has called "Urgent, real, and often very funny." I agree! You can read more about it here: http://amzn.to/Zeql9x and here: www.thebanksofcertainrivers.com -- hope you join in the fun! Let me know what you think of the pick.

Lisa Brackmann | 1 comments I'm going on an actual VACATION! (well, I still will have work to do but close enough) and have this downloaded on my kindle, ready to read. Looking forward to it!

Becky | 3 comments Hoping to dive in very shortly. Have family visiting (which always slows my reading pace) but am very much looking forward to this one after your recommendation, Catherine!

Great Q! Hmm, since I'm only a third in (reading time is extra-rare since I now commute by bike rather than train) I'd say I'm more keen on the relationships than the standalone characters. And I love the relationship between Neil and his son Chris. Harrison has taken great care in showing us, even in the initial pages and with subtle strokes, that the two of them love and value each other very much. The cover copy hints at that relationship coming into peril, so I'm anxious to see what develops. Plus, Chris himself seems like an anti-norm young adult – and I dig that.

How about you, Catherine? :)

I think that's a pivotal relationship in the book. SPOILER ALERT: but I have a special place in my heart for Alan; he is the perfect combination of truth teller, comic relief, support and you can't help wishing the best for him.
