Does a hero with a villainous past make good heroes? Do you consider a hero who does illegal activities villainous? What makes a villain a villain?

It all depends on the author and the story. Sometimes the more villainous the hero is, the great his redemption. You know, the bigger they are, the harder they fall!
Great question!

Yes, I agree that it depends a lot on the author and story. For instance, I'm not a great fan of the criminal heroes or heroines, (i.e. thief or assassin) but some authors can make me love them. Anne Stuart is one. Linda Howard is another.

I don't remember that... was it under the Elizabeth Jennings' name?

Anne Stuart!!! Villian's we hate to love....but we do!!! Especially Bastien from Black Ice popped in my head as soon as I seen this thread!!

I think a villainous hero has to be one who is still doing villainous things when the book starts. I can't necessarily judge him villainous for what he did in the past if he's no longer doing that and his actions are honorable. Those kinds of heroes are on the path to reformation and are probably more like knights in tarnished armor than villains.

I guess I'm weird. I have a thing for assassin heroes, but not so much thieves. Prior to Rehvenge from the Black Dagger Brotherhood, I would never have gone for a pimp hero, and I still am not a fan of that. I don't like the idea of a hero who exploits women.
