I never know what to say about myself but here goes...
I'm originally from England but currently live on the coast of north Wales. I'm married with three children and a cat.

I love reading absolutely anything (with the possible exception of romantic novels). I very rarely watch tv, I much prefer to wander around art galleries or bookshops. I have way too many unread books but it never stops me looking for more.

My favourite thing in the world is to curl up with my cat, a good book and a nice cup of tea :)

Adam Csincsi | 1 comments Hello everybody! I am completely new not only in this group but on this site as well. I'm Adam, I'm from Hungary and I like goodreads already.

message 3: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) Hi! I'm a student studying in Wales, soon starting an English Literature degree after getting a Diploma in Children's Publishing and Illustration. I've been on goodreads just over a year and love reading, obviously!

message 6: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 2 comments Hello:) From SW Britain now but born in Bucks. Reader and writer of fantasy and erotica and reader of sci-fi, historical romance, mystery, crime and history.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi! I'm from Rhode Island (in the US!...?). I have a BA in English language and literature and I'm currently trying to get into a Master's of Library Science program. My biggest interest is folklore. Pretty much from anywhere.

message 8: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 G'day all

My name is Sally and I live in Australia - I was born in Bucks in England but we emigrated to Australia when I was 12.

I stumbled on this group and saw that it was new and as I love having fun and am a bookaholic I thought I'd join and see how it went :)

Am off to Europe in June - hubby and I are doing one of those river cruises - Budapest to Amsterdam. I am very excited and busy organising ebooks and physical books for the trip.

I read across the genre so happy to read anything if I can.

message 9: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Hi guys'n'girls! Originally from London, I'm now living in Hampshire with my wife, two kids and a fish tank (yes, it also has fish in it*). My relationship with books has had its ups and downs, especially during my lengthy education; where I learnt to study them, but forget how to enjoy.

I've typically been a sci-fi/fantasy reader, but I'm always open to new things and look forward to expanding my horizons with some Jolly Good Reading in the future!

I'm new to goodreads, so be gentle!

* At least they were there the last time I checked. I suspect they're planning another escape attempt. It's the way they stare at me, unblinking!

message 10: by Jen (new)

Jen | 468 comments Mod
... another escape attempt Stephen? I'd love to hear how their first bid for freedom went and how did you manage to foil them? Or do I have to wait for the book? lol :D

message 11: by Stephen (new)

Stephen ..have you ever been around when a fish makes a 'run' for it? Anyone near the tank is compelled to perform a tragic impression of Riverdance, desperately trying not to step on the flailing creature, but ultimately crushing the poor thing along with a group exclamation of 'eugh'.

People think they own fish.. but don't realise they are just being controlled by a far more advanced species.

I think I've gone a little off-topic!?

message 12: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Hi all

Thought I'd better introduce myself; I'm Ellie, from Gloucestershire, joined Goodreads a while ago but only recently discovered the Groups section!!

I enjoy reading a wide range of genre, currently dividing my time between chick lit (for light relief) and history.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello,

I'm Lee, also from Gloucestershire (!) where I live in a triangular house with my husband and cat.
When I'm not reading or looking for new books I enjoy travelling by Tandem, swimming and drinking rose petal tea.
Stephen, I used to own a suicidal fish - I found each attempt so stressful that when it finally died (of natural causes I'm glad to say) I decided to give up on fish ownership. I still sometimes have dreams about walking into my room and finding the poor thing flapping about on the floor.
Anyway - just about to get my copy of our current read.

message 14: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Hi Lee! Ooh, goody - someone else to read The Shadow of the Wind. I'm about 20% in now, and stunned by Jen's ability to have finished already (but then, I had a feeling that I was a slow reader by Good Reads standards).

When I have to clean the fish tank, I still get nervous about some of the guys in there - especially the bottom feeders (no sniggering at the back please!) - they just have too much attitude! And I have nightmares about the fish escaping and swimming around the house.. does anyone know a good fish-therapist!?

message 15: by Claire (new)

Claire | 3 comments Hi, I'm Claire from Somerset. 40, one husband, one Labrador, 2 rabbits. No fish :)
I'm a literature graduate which is how I I developed a love of the 19th century novel, gothic fiction and Shakespeare.
My favourite authors are Terry Pratchett and Georgette Heyer. Oh and Jane Austen.
I also read a lot of non fiction history.

message 16: by Jen (new)

Jen | 468 comments Mod
poor "Adolf", he seems to be typecast lol :)

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Claire - I love Georgette Heyer too - I think the Cornithian, Frederica and Arabella are my favourites - how about you?

message 18: by Claire (new)

Claire | 3 comments Hi Lee - I love Frederica and Arabella too, certainly in my top 5. The others are The Talisman Ring (I just love the narrator on the audio version), Faro's Daughter and The Nonsuch. Georgette Heyer is my go to author when I need cheering up and Terry Pratchett isn't working his usual magic!

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes shes my not-feeling-very-well-and-generally-in-need-of-comfort author too

message 20: by Gill's (new)

Gill's likes reading (wwwgoodreadsgilltaylor) Hi everyone,

My name is Gill, I live on a narrowboat in Staffordshire with my husband and two cats. I have loved books from a very early age. I like to challenge myself by choosing some books outside of my comfort zone. Sometimes it works sometimes I wonder why I do it!! When I moved onto my boat I had to get rid of the thousands of books I had amassed, keeping only a handful of special books. Now I read and pass on a book, or buy it for my KOBO.

Hi Gill and welcome to the group :)
I'm not a fan of e books although I might have to rethink this as my bookcases are forever bulging!

message 22: by Gill's (new)

Gill's likes reading (wwwgoodreadsgilltaylor) Thanks Jen, My first choice would a real copy but reading on a KOBO has made me buy books I would never have bought in paperback!

Welcome to the group!
I read an ebook every so often but I much prefer physical copies....I just get more attached to the books in physical format =)

message 24: by Sam (new)

Sam Arnold (samharnold) Hi I am Sam. Can never remember a time I didn't have a book in my hand. Love all genre's but have found myself recently drawn to young adult and mystery and thriller. When I am not reading I am a foster parent so reading really has become my escape hatch.

Good to meet you all.

Hi Sam and welcome to the group!
I've been reading more detective novels this year and particularly like the Bryant and May stories by Christopher Fowler.

message 26: by Anna (new)

Anna (goodreadscomanna_shuk) Hello, everyone!
My name is Anna, I'm 23 and I'm a reader.=)
I became a bigger reader after I've read Harry Potter (when I was 12-13, I guess). And then rised from ashes again when I was 16-17 (because I was in kinda slump for a few years...).
I read everything except horror and abusive/violent stories, because A - I'm easily scared and B - violence is horrible.
Apart from those I can read pretty much every book you guys decide to read with you.:)
Hope we'll have a great time discussing books together. Have a great day!

Jeanette (jeanettes) Hi. I'm Jeanette and live in the UK (near Worthing). I'm married, have 2 daughters and 6 grandchildren. I've always been a bookworm and after my daughter's flew the nest, turned one of the bedrooms into my library room. I read most genre's. I have a kindle, but do prefer to hold a real book in my hands.

Mel (mehy) Hello, I'm Mel and I from South Wales. I have two young sons who seem to have inherited my love for reading.
I do enjoy a good thriller but also crave YA fantasy in between. I do have a hunger for books set in the UK at the moment, this is a very new trend for me and who knows what my tastes will be in a few weeks or months.

Welcome to the group Mel! I'm trying to diversify what I'm reading too and there seem to be few popular books set in the UK but I'm always trying to find more =)

message 42: by Shima (last edited Jun 16, 2014 03:24AM) (new)

Shima (shimasara) Hi everyone!
My name is Sara and I'm from Lisbon, Portugal.
I'm an English Studies graduate and I got here via a Goodreads suggestion of "groups with my books". Unfortunately I don't have a lot of free time, but when I can I really enjoy visiting cultural heritage and, obviously, reading.
Except for a couple of shows(such as Grey's Anatomy :P ) I don't really watch TV.
What I look for in a group is some kindred spirits with whom to discuss books I've read and who will "convince" me to read this or that book :)

message 43: by Jen (new)

Jen | 468 comments Mod
Hi Sara, welcome to the group.
I hope we can inspire you to read many books and please feel free to discuss any of your current reads with us :)
This is a very informal, friendly group of readers with a diverse interest of genres.
