Please feel free to suggest books which you feel will interest/challenge the group.
Our monthly book will be chosen from your suggestions based on the Goodreads ratings and availability.

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I would like to suggest Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Suzanna Clarke? :)

Charlotte Jones (ramblingsofanelfpire) I'd also like to suggest 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss. I've wanted to read it for a while and it's a classic sci-fi/fantasy novel :)

Thanks for your suggestions :)

Please keep nominating books and adding comments if you second a suggestion. I really don't know what will appeal to our members yet so all input is welcome :)

I would be up for anything, but I've been intending to read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell for a while.

So have I Katherine. I'll mark that down as the third book (25th July start)

Thanks Gemma. I did think of that but the group is quite small at the moment. I think polls would be very good as the group grows. Could you let me know how your other group did this please?

I didn't take your comment as pushy Gemma, I welcome suggestions. I think that, in time we should have a choice of two books a month. - read one or both, whichever you prefer :)

message 9: by Stephen (new)

Stephen That's great, I've just picked up a copy of Foundation and JS&MN on ebay (<£5 with packing) - so I'm ready.

Birdsong - got it, read it - but it's one of the few books that I would spend time reading again! It's got my vote.

My suggestion for this list would be Neuromancer (wiki link) - a book I've always meant to read, but never got around to it!

I would like to nominate American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I've really enjoyed all his other work that I've read so far.

I think that until we have enough members to use a poll for books we should do this:

1. Suggest a title
2. Someone seconds it
3. A third vote and it's added to the monthly list

Does that sound fair to everyone?

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

That sounds fair to me.

Perhaps we should discuss etiquette a bit, though, because I don't want to bother anyone by being an overactive seconder but am not sure how to define that.

(...)

(I second American Gods!!)

message 12: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Ooh Katherine, you overactive seconder! ;)

I wonder if the 'suggest a book' discussion should be performed monthly. We've now got a CHOSEN ONE (did anyone else hear an echo there?!) - which makes three books.. leading us into Aug/Sept.

Can comments be stopped on a discussion? We could halt this one, then start a new one nearer to the time. Suggestions on this list could still be repeated on others.

PS - the three-vote idea works for me. I'll hold off thirding (is that a word?!) American Gods for the moment.. I'll look into it though, as Gaiman tends not to disappoint. But this discussion is already long enough that I'm forgetting the books at the top (er.. yes.. my mouse wheel only goes one way.. honest?)

I agree with Stephen. We need to have a "tidier" system for choosing books.

I think we should stop suggestions until 25th July. Then limit it to one proposal each and two votes each. We will do that on a monthly basis and stop as soon as the next book has received the correct amount of votes.

Claire | 3 comments I'd like to read American Gods too :)
