What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

So a couple years ago I read a book about a young girl I think in the 60s. All I remember is that she befriended a man with special needs who lived with his mother. In one part they went to a carnival and he almost jumped off the Ferris wheel I think because he was scared or something. Then at the end he hung himself :( but if you could tell me the name of this book I would be so grateful! Thanks!
