What would you do if you won 1 Million Dollars???

My husband and I are always talking about this when we hear the winning lottery tickets are so high (not that we ever buy any lottery tickets though to even have a chance of winning!! Lol). Our first thing would be to quit our jobs, then purchase a bigger house with tons of land! :)

Amanda (pandwen) | 19 comments a big house with a HUGE library (cause one day i will have enough books to fill it) and just enough land to keep a horse on ... and a horse... i may be stretching my million a bit.

Francielle De Oliveira (itsmefrancielle) | 81 comments I would buy an apartment, travel to Europe and buy many many books.

Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 1260 comments It's not much really. Not enough to not ever work that's for sure.
My husband and I talk about this a lot, although it's always £1m which is a bit more than $1m.
We've always said we'd do what we could to make our life easier throughout rather than splash out. So we wouldn't buy a bigger house, just pay off the mortgage on this one which is plenty big enough. Then I would quit work but Daniel would still need to earn money (which is fine as he loves his job), he might just go freelance though.
We'd buy a car each probably and certainly give some to family. I'm sure I'd go buy some nice new clothes too as I miss that with being so careful with money all the time. Then the rest would be for the kids to go to university and have a car when they're older.

Boring I know, but I just want to enjoy everyday life for as long as possible. I'd want it to buy us time together as a family so we'd be pretty careful with it to ensure it would last as long as possible.

F.W. Pinkerton (FWPinkerton) | 5 comments Pay off my close family's debts and give them a small amount each. Then buy myself a nice little house and rent that out for a few years while I went travelling.I kind of love the romantic idea of buying a yacht and sailing around the world.

message 12: by Valeria (new)

Valeria (vale_ck) I would definitely travel the world, help my family and invest.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

I'd keep quiet about it after I pay off my student debts and divvy it up into some investing while keeping the rest in my bank account to earn interest.

OK, so this is probably more than a million...

message 18: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (Chelsafiria) | 1 comments I would bring my family on a Humungous trip, but money away to pay off my sisters and my university for the future, and find a good cause to put some money towards! A lot of it would be saved for the future though! :) also I'd make sure my parents quit their jobs so they wouldn't have to work anymore :)

message 24: by ☆Joycedale☆ (last edited Feb 22, 2014 08:45AM) (new)

☆Joycedale☆ We always joke about this. We would have 100 acres with a 6 bedroom house built in the middle. It would have 4 bathrooms, a state of the art kitchen, wrap around porch, a library to rival the town one and a attached 6 car garage. I would have a brand new suv. We would buy my sis, my sister in law and my parent in laws all homes.

I think you can do that last one without money, but the rest, yeah you'll need billions!

message 29: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (ashlexa) | 12 comments I would definitely...

~Give food to the poor.
~Build homeless shelters as well as churches in different areas of the world.
~Build a good and cheap medical college for those who want to study medicine.
~Build food and clothing franchises that give to charity.
~Build clothing factories for people to work for producing clothes instead of China.
~Build animal shelters.
~Donate to charities for cancer and other causes.
~Buy acres of land to farm organically in order to send that food to the poor.
~Buy an average house in the countryside near a city that has a wraparound porch and a lot of bay windows.
~Pay for the private school and college of my future kids.
~Fund raise for people in need of scholarships for colleges.
~Travel the world to find people in need of food and shelter.(I'm able to travel a plane for less, so that wouldn't be a money problem)
~See the 7 wonders of the world. :D

I would at least be able to do some of these with a million dollars. Although, the only thing I want is to be happy, and I don't have to have money so that I can.

message 30: by Micheala (new)

Micheala Buy more books.
Focus on my writing.
Build a huge library for my books.
Go to Disney world and the Harry Potter place.
And (most important for me at the moment) pay for university.

Shane (shanemorgan) | 23 comments I'd buy land (not sure where exactly) that will pass on to my generation. Oh gosh i'm weird

message 34: by Liza (new)

Liza | 1 comments I'd divide it into 5 categories:
~Firstly, buying the book "Tax Evasion for Dummies".
~Then investing some of the money into my new start-up business Hollow Leg Store, which means a lot to me and I hope develops into something that can make a meaningful contribution to the world.
~Thirdly, giving to other causes and companies that I respect the morals of and want to support.
~Fourthly, I would travel. Exploring new spaces and cultures always keeps my perspective fresh.
~And lastly, I would put the rest away-- you never know when you might need it, and I tend to squirrel away savings for the unexpected. (and the occasional rainy day) ;)

message 35: by Georgete (new)

Georgete Papadimitrios | 1 comments I would be happy just being able to buy and maintain a nice big house for the rest of my life. Big enough for a pool and my dog. No more being homeless or roomates. Id be able to keep a running truck or car. No more asking for or needing a ride somewhere and id save the rest to pay bills mortgage and the occasional want or need. Maybe a small get away with my friends and family too. Modest but im humble.

message 36: by George (new)

George S | 1 comments I would try to win my ex back. Even if she is not worth if she returns for the money. But sometimes many things arent worth that much as it seems. If i cant i would just give it to some random so he can do something usefull with it.

message 37: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Sternshein (bookdorkjenn) | 93 comments a million dollars isn't as much as some of you realize.. lol. I mean yeah you could do a lot, house, car, education. but probably not your dream house on the beach and your dream car. I love some of people's ideas... go to Disneyland daily... lol. someone said they'd pay for their education and their sister's then make their parents quit their jobs and live on the rest of the money, they couldn't live too too long.. or 100 acres and a few houses described,. ok i'm being cynical I know. I mean I'd be happy to win $100 honestly. it's interesting how most people would pay off debts, seems like we all have debt in common.., I mean i'd do exactly the same with a million, pay mine and my family debt. it'd be pretty much gone after that. maybe enough for a weeks vacy for my fam left. had to weigh in on this thread... I love reading the ideas though.. :)

Yes, a million dollars doesn't buy that much these days. If I won a million dollars the first thing I would do is buy a lifetime long term health plan for my wife and I, ensuring we had medical care if we became incapacitated or too feeble to take care of ourselves, I would put the rest into a combination of high yield utility stocks (which is not very high nowadays) and short term bonds (one year or less.) I would gradually pull the money out of one or the other and use it to travel. I might consider taking out a loan for an apartment in Lisbon, Portugal, and then put the apartment into a vacation rental pool. That way it would mostly pay for itself, and we would have a base to live in when we travel to Europe. I might think of doing that in Singapore also.
