Crack. The sound of the metal bat hitting the baseball was all that could be heard in the field. The ball soared off towards left field and Theodore smiled inwardly to himself, the sound of the bat hitting the ball was always a sound that he had always enjoyed. It brought back the early days of his life, tossing the ball in the backyard with his dad. Pausing his hitting streak he headed over towards his waterbottle and glove on the ground. Picking up the bottle and popping off the top he took a long drink from the canister before pouring it over his head, the cool streams of water running down his back and staining his shirt with water rather than just sweat.
Serenity had her sunglasses on and was basically falling asleep on the stands when a loud crack startled her awake. God she was so tired! Startled she just about fell off her seat but her sunglasses did pop off. Covering up a yawn she rubbed her eyes before bending down and grabbing them. Turning she saw a boy... Theo or something. "Hey,"She called out to him as she stood back up. "Nice hit."(Sorry crap post>.<)
A voice startled Theodore and he looked around, sight blurry from water being on the front of his glasses. Pausing to toss the empty canister to the ground he took off his glasses and wiped them on the corner of his shirt before putting them back on and looking up towards the bleachers to see pretty little Serenity. Of course he knew her, they'd been lab partners during his sophomore year. Smiling at her he waved and nodded in appreciation. Wasn't she a black gavel? So she really shouldn't have been talking to him.......or he to her. Although she did look out of sorts.....she wasn't a druggee was she? From what he knew she was a bit troublesome. It followed behind her like a dark rain-cloud.
"Hi Theo,"Serenity told him smiling as she reached him. "Sorry if I scared you, I'm kind of out of it. Stayed up late,"She told him as she put her sunglasses on her head so he could see her eyes. "Why are you up so early anyways?" But now that she thought about it, their class in sophomore year was first period if she remembered correctly. And he was always there before her and she never arrived late. Him what do you know, maybe he's an early bird. God no, she loves her sleep. Which is why she wasn't a nocturnal vampire either. In fact she was a normal sleeper, unlike most people here with had sleeping issues. "So what's up with you?"
Looking at Serenity it was easy to tell she was tired, shoulders slightly slumped and all that, but when she took off the shades it was ten times easier. She'd obviously covered up the shadows under her eyes with make-up. Most guys wouldn't have been able to tell, but with Theodore's mom and sisters? It was easy for him. "I like waking up early. I like to watch the sun rise and color the sky." Shrugging he bit the inside of his cheek, trying to stop himself from smiling at her. He wasn't supposed to socialize with those outside of his team. Especially not with Alton as the president. That guy made war generals seem like the Easter bunny. Clearing his throat he shrugged, "Just doing some practice....how was your summer, Ren?" The old nickname just kinda slipped out. He'd called her that when they were little, when they'd always been stuck hanging out with eachother because their parents had been friends and dragged their kids to the Christmas parties they'd thrown and attended. Hoping she didn't notice he cast his eyes towards the ground and ran a hand through his hair.
Serenity frowned when she saw the way Theo reacted when she talked to him,"Theo if you don't want to talk to m-" She was cut off when he asked about her summer. She was going to leave when he used the nickname. "It's been a while since you've called me that,"She told him softly and smiled. She remembered when they were small, she had been so excited that her parents finally decided to take her to one of their parties and on Christmas! She was never allowed to go so she made no complaint as always as her mother used her as a barbie doll. That night she had on a white dress and a red bow. With heels that were entirely not for a little girl. She hadn't known why she was there for the minute she got there she had been forced to play with Theo. She hadn't want too, she wanted to be with her parents. She had been pouting until she dirtied herself, and got scared that her mom would be mad. But Theo helped her out and since then she didn't mind, liked it actually to be with him. "Tense as usual, you know my home situation. You?"
Shaking his head, Theodore ran his hand through his hair, "No. No it's not that. It's just that....." He trailed off for a moment, his eyes shifting to the bleachers looking at Serenity's shoes through the metal rows before he continued speaking, "Well we shouldn't be conversing. Different teams......" It was a lame excuse but it was the truth, after all with the way that Alton had become president this year? It was obvious to the world that the dymias would be quite the threat. Alton was not the kind of guy one wanted to mess with. Biting his lip for a moment he nodded, knowing all about her 'family'. "It was fun." That was all he would say about his summer. No need to really elaborate, right?
Serenity laughed, not out of amusement, and shook her head. "Unbelievable." She walked until she was right in front of him. "Different teams? I'm on the Student Council of the Black Gavels and I'm talking to you. Even Roland talks to me and he's on your team." She shook her head again, this time in disappointment. "You know Theo, oh wait. I probably can't call you that anymore. Theodore then, we've been friends since we were children and I never thought you would tell me, we shouldn't talk. But if you want to be like that, then fine." She turned on her heel,"This conversation was fun,"The last word was coated in bitterness as she put on her sunglasses and walked away..until her foot got stuck and she was about to fall.
At the harsh laughter from Serenity's mouth, Theodore felt his neck heat up with the tell tale signs of a blush. It wasn't that he didn't want to talk to Serenity, I mean she was nice enough and they had been friends as kids. It was just....well they were different teams and having friends among different teams was troublesome. Under his breath, and not really at her he frowned slightly muttering, "I'm not Roland." He hated that comparison. Roland was a good guy, yeah, but they were both jocks and Roland was ten times more interesting. The comparison between them bugged Theodore.....he shouldn't have to be anything like Roland....just cause they liked sports? No. Rubbing the back of his neck he sighed and bit his lip, his instincts were to apologize. Of course....he knew he should just make this a clean get-away. Although it really wasn't for him to decide as she suddenly wobbled, her heel stuck in the dirt and she went teetering to the side. Reaching out his hand wrapped around her arm instinctively and pulled her right way up. "Are you okay?" Worry creeped into his tone, eyes slightly wide with worry that he might've hurt her in his none too gentle attempt to pull her to her feet again.
Serenity was about to fall because of her damn heel, when suddenly Theodore grabbed her arm and helped her back up. Although he did hold her tightly enough to wince and for her to know their would be a bruise there in a few hours. "Should you even be asking me that? Should you have helped me up? We're from different teams, you know,"She through is own logic back in his face as she flipped her hair back. However her anger was slowly going away, if it hadn't been for Theo, she would have fallen into the dirt. She wanted to be angry, he blew her off because of some stupid rules! Sure she herself had pointed a finger at Ophelia but now that rule seemed so silly now. She'll have to talk to that girl later. "Thank you,"She told him softly, all her anger had now gone away. She reached out to hug him but pulled back, right different teams. She glanced at him, an embarrassed blush on her face. "Sorry about that, I guess I'll have to get used to this wall between us now,"She told him awkwardly. The wall and line he put up, she was on one side and he on the other. She tried to knock it down but he still didn't want her on his side of that wall. It felt off, just a few weeks ago they were at each other's houses.
Dropping his hands to the side he bit his lip and wished he had pockets to tuck his hands into. Sighing he shook his head, "Serenity, I didn't mean it like that. I just.......I know that it's bad when people get shunned by their teams and I don't want that to happen to either of us. Just think how it would look to people, us two hanging out this early in the morning all alone? It looks like we're plotting a conspiracy." Laughing slightly he paused and then rubbed the back of his throat feeling awkward about how he had said it. He really didn't mean it to sound that way, and his obvious embarrassment about it was made clear by the bright flush covering his cheeks and neck. "I-I jus- I didn't- I know- I-" He trailed off completely silent unsure how to phrase what he was trying to say.
Serenity shook her head when she saw him get all nervous and stumble over his words. "Okay Theo stop talking before you give yourself a heart attack,"She told him teasingly. "Trust me when I say people don't think I'm smart enough to plan anything. I'm just a model,"She shrugged and smiled kindly. "It's nice that your looking out for me and all but I really do think your taking this entire rule way too seriously,"She shook her head and hugged him when he started to blush. Leaning over she kissed his cheek,"Yeah I know, no hugging, blah blah blah." She waved him off. "But you have to deal with it because it's me. Unless you want to upset me. Do you want to upset me?" She didn't really mean she would get upset she just wanted to see his reaction.
Nodding at her words of him to stop talking he tightly pressed his lips together in a firm line, wanting to force himself to stop talking he paused listening to her words. When she suddenly hugged him and then kissed his cheek his skin warmed even more, Theodore was not the kind of guy who was good with affection. He just wasn't quite sure how to handle it and clearing his throat awkwardly he stepped back, creating some space between him and the black gavel in front him to make it easier to think. "I don't mean to upset you, Serenity. You know that I don't mean to do anything like that..." Rubbing the back of his neck he sighed and bit his lip for a moment before adjusting his glasses and smiling at her.
Serenity laughed when she saw him fumble. Theo had never been one with her closeness, though after all this time she figured he was used to it. She was all to familiar with his red cheeks and stumbling words when she did. A smile bloomed in her lips as he fumbled with his glasses,"You look good,"She complimented. "But I warn you now that you want be able to get rid of me so easily,"She teased him and patted his arm gently. Not that it mattered, he probably wouldn't even be able to feel it. "I'll see you around. Don't miss me too much.,"Teasing him, she waved goodbye as she went in her way, deciding she needed a nap in her room.
Theodore watched her walk off and unconsciously rubbed his arm where she had touched it before. After a moment or so of silence he sighed and then walked over towards his stuff, gathering it and deciding he'd head back to his dorm to shower up and maybe find someone to talk to. Distract him from feeling guilty about how he had treated Serenity.
