Sally Lowry | 30 comments So we've agreed before that the TV series is different from the book, but that most of us enjoy both. Most of us don't like Chase. But what a bombshell (and a nice tie-in to the books) that Chase is Lucian's nephew. Doesn't make me like him any better, but it helps tie the book world and the TV world closer together.

Katherine (stitchkat) | 13 comments Lucian is a hoot!

message 3: by Peggy (new)

Peggy Belew | 6 comments Did you see the episode in the first season with Lucian? Peter Weller played him. I also think the character of Branch is based on Turk in the first book, he was
Lucian's nephew.

Nancy McWilliams | 32 comments Just starting the Longmire books. Great storyteller. Looking forward to this summer reading. n

Mary | 23 comments go to poisoned pen and their livestream of his interview before signing books earlier this month.really good insight to the author an the series and the newest book.

Nancy McWilliams | 32 comments Just finished a close study of my Atlas map of Wyoming. Couldn't find Absaroka County. Did find the Powder River so I get the general vicinity. Actually I drove thru that country on my way to Alaska in 1991. Each day of my drive from Colorado Springs to Anchorage I would wake to another spectacular sight. Each day greater heights, more vast landscapes. I think I'm going to very much like Craig Johnson as a descriptor of the setting for his stories. Already he's using terminology I have to look up. (Maundy yellow?) Later. n

message 7: by Mary (new)

Mary | 23 comments he creates a sense of his place which is part of hi character just alaska is real through kate

message 8: by Donna (new)

Donna Kopp | 12 comments I'm waiting for his first book, The Cold Dish, from the library. I'm looking forward to reading the series. This goodreads discussion prompted me to watch the series on TV. Thanks to all of you for your recommendations. I love the western United States!

message 9: by Mary (new)

message 10: by Donna (new)

Donna Kopp | 12 comments I'll check him (?) out. Thanks.

message 11: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 2 comments Finished the first book and immediately purchased the second. I really like the humor and the way he tells the story. I've also been watching the first season on Netflix and though the two don't mesh, it is nice to have a visual of the scenery. I do like the show but not as well as the books.

message 12: by Donna (new)

Donna Kopp | 12 comments Just finished The Cold Dish and I'm really happy to begin this series. I also read Hell is Empty because it was the first episode I saw on tv. Wow! How much is left out when the episode is less than an hour long.
There was so much more depth to the book. Can't wait to begin the next one.

message 13: by Mary (new)

Mary | 23 comments am on book seven and a signed copy of the new one is on my table waiting to be read.a great summer discovery

message 14: by Mary (new)

Mary | 23 comments just finished 7 not a a disappointment yet in the series. bookstore owner gave me an arc( advanced reader copy )of spirit of steamboat a novella. do if you get a chance read his short works form amazon. divorce horse is a hoot. these are not mysteries as much as they are setting and character studies, but well worth the read.am on to c.j.box.ay info

message 15: by Sara (new)

Sara (oldsam1) | 6 comments So glad that The Cold Dish was recommended by people here! Read it, and am ready to read the rest of the series. Also recommended it to my mother, who lives in a retirement community. She's already put Dana's books on the list for their library to get, and now she's going to add Craig Johnson, too. :)

message 16: by Peggy (new)

Peggy Belew | 6 comments Those of you starting to read this series, when you get to the third book and see it's set in Philadelphia and you think "do I really want to read this one?" We'll the answer is YES! Great story.

message 17: by Janice (new)

Janice | 15 comments longmire is the best~ books not tv.....tv omits and adds stuff that isn't in jiobe with the books....Philadel ---great.....keep readomg

And remember....in September we will hold a chat to discuss the first book in the series, A Cold Dish. It should be fun. The date is TBA. I am so glad you all are enjoying this discovery of Craig Johnson's work. It is a great series.

message 19: by Nancy (new)

Nancy McWilliams | 32 comments This is a terrific thread for Craig Johnson. I'm only on "4" but couldn't get "2" from the library. Regardless, I think this is great adventure and detective fiction. And the actor portraying Longmire on TV captures the character very well.

And I owe it to the Danamaniacs for the introduction to Craig Johnson. Dana Rocks !!!! n

Mary | 23 comments am finishing serpent. and have read all thenivellas as well except steamboat. hope I amnot teaching on chatnight. class onwed and 4 tuesday in sept and oct.

message 21: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (noporunner68) | 2 comments I am working on The Cold Dish and am enjoying it very much. It is good to have a break occasionally from Infinite Jest, which I am reading for the second time, and love to bits, but am woefully behind the reading schedule of the Summer of Jest group.

message 22: by Mary (new)

Mary | 9 comments Am past the halfway point in the series and don't want to continue because I want them to last! We "discovered" the Bighorns on a road trip eight years and have also read C.J. Boxx. I watch the TV show, but have to separate the books and the series in my mind or I go crazy muttering, "not so".

message 23: by Mary (new)

Mary | 23 comments thismary agrees with mary in 22. am just starting box as a pal lent me 2 not in order but good just the same.

message 24: by Donna (new)

Donna Kopp | 12 comments Cathy--can't wait for the September chat about The Cold Dish.
Just finished Another Man's Moccasins. The Viet Nam background was compelling. I also agree with the recommendations of Kindness Goes Unpunished, set in Philadelphia. Great to get some background on Vic and lots of development of Cady.
I'm so hooked on this series.

message 25: by Sally (new)

Sally Lowry | 30 comments This is one case where I don't mind the TV adaptation, I do prefer the books but am enjoying the show too. At least they haven't taken everything we love about the books and changed it.

message 26: by Janet (new)

Janet Ghilarducci | 3 comments I watch the show as a separate entity entirely from the books. But I am still annoyed at the TV writers' need to add an element from the past that haunts the characters such as the murder of Walt's wife and the murderer's subsequent murder by Henry?! And "They've found me" by Vic? I mean, these things aren't at all necessary in the books, but this seems to be a common thread in so many TV shows, my dad would call it hackneyed!

message 27: by Mary (new)

Mary | 23 comments have read all 8 and never once it it hinted that longmire's wife's death is anything but cancer and vic is more and more involved with walt whose daughter has married her brother/ book's character's interesting but have different back stories. often wonder if they read the books. still i enjoy both

message 28: by Sally (new)

Sally Lowry | 30 comments I'm reading the latest Longmire now but also watching the TV series and occasionally suffer from whiplash because of the differences between the two. It's like those sci fi shows where you slip into an alternate universe! ;-)

Karen Zulkowski | 5 comments Have bay if you read Margaret Coel? It takes place on the Wind River reservation Wy

She is as close to Hillerman as I have found.

message 34: by Donna (new)

Donna Kopp | 12 comments Just finished "Junkyard Dogs" and "As the Crow Flies." Love the humor in both, but I laughed out loud at Walt's musing in "Crow" about who might play Chief Lolo Long and him in a movie. Don't miss his selections in Chapter 15, although both folks are long gone. Except....

Waiting anxiously for A&E to announce the 3rd season of Longmire has approved. Really had trouble at the beginning of the show with all the differences between the show and the books (Cady is in Philly and doesn't have a local love interest, etc). But...I'm hooked on both. Favorite of the series is Hell Is Empty.

message 36: by Donna (new)

Donna Kopp | 12 comments I watched part of the Series 1 DVD last night. It was a surprise to hear an Australian accent coming out of Walt's mouth. But he's just the right actor to play this part. I'm currently rereading "Another Man's Moccasins." I also have trouble with the differences, esp. the death of his wife, but have decided to just enjoy both interpretations.

message 37: by Susan (new)

Susan Gardiner | 1 comments I have read all of Margaret Coel's Wind River series and would highly recommend. Also, Library Journal gave a good review of Anne Hillerman's Spider Woman's Daughter, acontinuation of her father's Leaphorn/Chee series which is being released in October. Can't wait!

message 39: by Sally (new)

Sally Lowry | 30 comments I read Craig Johnson's Longmire short story/novella (The Messenger) today on my flight home from New York City and was laughing out loud. I do so enjoy spending time with Walt, Henry and Vic. :-)

message 41: by Nancy (new)
