I've recently read the book after being put off the story for years by the film - which I didn't like at all.
I really enjoyed the book mainly because of it's innocence. It's set in an English rural village in Victorian times, which I found much more feasible for the story. I can understand how it would be seen as a shocking read in it's day.
I know it's a bit dated now but I would have preferred for the film to have been closer to the book in time and location.

Hi Lora,
I've only seen the one with Tom Cruise, which was completely different in time and venue etc. I think the only thing that remained of the original plot was the eventual downfall of the aliens.
