Bettie I am just about to start chapter 6 and wonder if anyone else has read this yet. It's du Maurier's atmospherics at play in Italy and I am finding it excellent so far.

:O)

Misfit | 150 comments No, but I just placed a hold on it at the library. Although I'm starting a big fat book first so it will be a bit before I get to it. I also put holds on I'll Never Be Young Again and Julius.

Bettie hee - I have said it before - you ARE the du Maurier information point here at GR (and probably the universe and beyond too)

Misfit | 150 comments Bettie, I might be that once I finish her books, but I'm still a Du Maurier newbie - but I admit I'm hooked.

Vena {Deceased} | 22 comments While trying to think up questions for the Never-Ending Book Quiz, I was going through several of D du M's less-talked-about books. I lighted upon The Flight of the Falcon and would up reading several parts (I've read it several times completely).

I have to say that this one remains opaque for me -- I can't seem to remember details very well. The subject matter is a bit arcane...for me anyway, though I find the setting and the plot fascinating. While I think I get the ultimate point, it's not something that sticks with me from one reading to the next. Actually that can be a good thing! I am not anticipating things as much as when I'm reading a well-remembered story.

One thing about The Flight of the Falcon that has stuck with me is the Vespa-riding gangs of students. Heh! If you've read the book, I wonder if that is memorable to you as well?

In a way I feel that D du M in The Flight of the Falcon wrote more like she did in her unsettling short stories than in her full-length novels.

Misfit | 150 comments Funny how she is so freaking enigmatic at times we don't really always know what she was about.

I put a couple of D du M questions in the book quiz. One on The King's General and I think the other on House on the Strand. I forget now :)

Thanks, I will type in The House on the Strand and see if it helps me finally break 104. I would sure like to break 100 but its very hard to do. Thanks Misfit. I have forgotten The King's General so I will have to read that one again before I try it.

I did about 30 questions today on A Short History of Nearly Everything.

I loved it, and very different from the usual D du M formula we think of.
