In case you were under a rock today: Kate Middleton gave birth to a baby boy this afternoon.

Even though the world (aka Twittersphere) is joining in on the celebration, Prince Charles made sure to let everyone know how "overjoyed" he is at the arrival of his first grandson. Clarence House released this statement today:

“Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.
Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall were out of town on an official visit to Yorkshire today when Kate went into labor at St Mary's Hospital. From the folks here at HuffPost, we send our congratulations to everyone in the royal family!

The baby's going to be a looker!

Craig (twinstuff) I thought it was interesting that the same day that Prince Charles become a grandpa for the first time, Mitt Romney and his wife Ann welcomed grandchild #22 to the Romney family (also a boy). Romney is about 20 months older than Prince Charles.

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s First Day as New Parents

By Elise Solé, Shine Staff | Royal Baby Buzz

There's the royal baby! Kate Middleton and Prince William introduced the world to England's future king when they exited St. Mary's Hospital on Tuesday evening (local time) carrying their newborn son.

As the crowd broke out into cheers, people suddenly spilled out of the doorway, and seconds later, the couple exited the building. Middleton wore a Jenny Packham light blue dress with white polka dots (similar to the green one Princess Di wore the day she left the hospital with newborn William) and nude high heels and William was dressed in blue. Middleton carried the baby who was wrapped in a white blanket and passed the baby to William before the couple posed for photographers and answered questions.

"He's got a good pair of lungs on him," said William. "He's a big boy, he's quite heavy. We're still working on a name so we'll have that as soon as we can."

"It's very emotional and it's such a special time. I think any parent probably knows what this feeling is like," said Middleton.

"I'll remind him of his tardiness when he's a bit older," said William. "Hopefully, the hospital and you guys can all get back to normal now. And we can look after him. He's got her looks, thankfully."

Middleton said, "No, no, no."

When a reporter asked if the royal baby has hair, William replied, "He's got way more than me. Thank god".

The couple then walked back inside the hospital. Moments later, the couple re-emerged with William carrying the car seat. He got in the front seat and took the wheel while Middleton sat in the back with her baby.

Earlier that day, the royal couple released an official statement on Tuesday through Kensington Palace.

“We would like to thank the staff at the Lindo Wing and the whole hospital for the tremendous care the three of us have received. We know it has been a very busy period for the hospital and we would like to thank everyone - staff, patients and visitors - for their understanding during this time.”

A Kensington Palace spokesman added: “Mother, son and father are all doing well this morning.” The statement also read that the name of the future monarch was undecided and that the family is expected to leave the hospital on Tuesday evening (not before 6 p.m. BST) or Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, the newborn's other grandparents, Carole and Michael Middleton, paid a visit to St. Mary's Hospital. And Prince Charles and Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall arrived as well, waving to the crowd before entering the hospital. As photographers captured Kate's beaming parents on the steps of the Lindo Wing, they were greeted by lead clinician Jonathan Ramsey, before being introduced to the young prince.

"We could not be happier," Prince William said Monday through his spokesman. Unlike previous royals, William was at his wife’s side as she gave birth and spent Monday night in the hospital. However, the couple are expected to follow tradition by debuting the baby on the steps when they leave St Mary's Hospital, just as Prince Charles and late mother, Princess Diana, did with Prince William."

On Monday, palace officials confirmed that Kate Middleton gave birth at St. Mary’s Hospital to a boy weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces at 4:24 p.m. BST. The newborn, officially called the Prince of Cambridge, is the first royal to use the title in 100 years.

The royal family (along with the rest of the world) rejoiced. "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news," according to an email sent to the press.

Also expressing his joy was Prince Charles who released a statement through Clarence House, saying he is "enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time."
"Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild," he said. "It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy."

The Duchess of Cornwall added: "It's wonderful for the grandfather. He's brilliant with children so he'll have a wonderful time."

Even President Barack Obama sent his well wishes. "Michelle and I are so pleased to congratulate The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the joyous occasion of the birth of their first child," he said in a statement released by the White House. "We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings. The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations. Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince."

I am putting my money on the name "George" for the new Prince, in honor of Queen Elizabeth's father. It appears that "James" is also one of the favorites but because of what is happening in the political world regarding England and Scotland, that name may be out.

William and Kate keep world waiting for royal baby's name

Prince William and his wife Kate kept the world guessing about the name of Britain's new prince after presenting their newborn son to the world for the first time Tuesday
.
"We're still working on a name. So we'll have that as soon as we can," William told scores of reporters as he cradled the child outside St. Mary's Hospital, where he was born not quite 24 hours earlier.

The royal couple may well take their time in deciding. Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh took a month before settling on the name Charles for the Prince of Wales. Princess Diana and Prince Charles took a week before settling on William's four names.

"Who knows what the future will hold," said Timothy Long, a curator at the Museum of London, which is celebrating the royal birth with a special exhibition showcasing royal baby items. "But I'm sure with that comes a little bit of pressure."

The bookies are hoping for everyone to take their time. The bets just keep rolling on in while everyone ponders the future.

"We're taking in money by the pramload," said Rory Scott, a spokesman for Paddy Power, a bookmaker. It's also taking wagers on the royal baby's first word and where he will be christened.

The baby waved his hands a little but otherwise appeared quiet during his first, and very noisy, encounter with the press Tuesday.
The infant is third in line to become monarch one day, after his grandfather, Prince Charles, and William.

"He's got her looks, thankfully," William said, referring to his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, as the newborn prince squirmed in his arms and poked a tiny hand out of his swaddling blanket, almost like a little royal wave.

"He's got a good pair of lungs on him, that's for sure," William added with a grin. "He's a big boy. He's quite heavy."

The couple re-entered the hospital to place the child in a car seat before re-emerging to get into a black Range Rover.

With William at the wheel, they drove away. Palace officials said they will head to an apartment in Kensington Palace and spend the night there.

The birth marks a new chapter for William and Kate, who had enjoyed a quiet life away from the public eye in Anglesey, Wales, since their wedding in April 2011.

The couple had been living in a small Welsh cottage while William — known as Flight Lieutenant Wales — completed his term as a search-and-rescue pilot.

Now that they are a family, they are moving to a much larger apartment in Kensington Palace in central London, where William spent most of his childhood and where it will be much more difficult to keep a low profile and avoid the press.

Earlier Tuesday, William's father, Charles, and his wife, Camilla, as well as Michael and Carole Middleton — Kate's parents — visited the young family at the hospital.

Charles called the baby "marvelous," while a beaming Carole Middleton described the infant as "absolutely beautiful."

It was not immediately clear when Queen Elizabeth II would meet the newborn heir. The queen was hosting a reception at Buckingham Palace Tuesday evening, and was due to leave for an annual holiday in Scotland in the coming days.

Prince George Alexander Louis: Kate and William reveal royal baby's name

Baby, who will be known as Prince George of Cambridge, is named one day after mother left hospital

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have announced their newborn son is to be called George Alexander Louis. He will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.

The announcement at 6.20pm showed the couple have chosen to stick with very traditional royal names. There have already been six British monarchs called George – the last being the Queen's father, George VI. Louis is also a favourite and was the name of Lord Mountbatten, the uncle of the Duke of Edinburgh.

The announcement comes a day after the duchess left hospital and two days after she gave birth, and hours after the Queen met her great-grandson for the first time.

George was the most popular name with betting firms William Hill, Coral and Paddy Power. James was also a favourite with punters, with Alexander, Henry, Louis, Richard and Arthur the next most popular choices.

It was widely expected that William and Kate would not wander far from convention and select anything too outlandish for a prince who is likely to reign one day and whose name could symbolise an era.

The naming has happened quickly by historical royal standards. Prince George's father was not named for a week, and it took a month for the name of the baby's paternal grandfather, Prince Charles, to be announced.

Earlier, for the first time in more than a century, a reigning monarch met a great-grandchild born in direct succession to the crown when the Queen was introduced to Prince George.

She made the short journey from Buckingham Palace to Kensington Palace, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their son had spent their first night at home as a new family.

Not since the birth in 1894 of the eldest son of the future George V and Queen Mary – the future Edward VIII, who later abdicated – in the twilight of Queen Victoria's reign has such an encounter occurred. Though Wednesday's meeting lasted just 30 minutes – before the start of the Queen's traditional summer break at Balmoral on Friday – it adds another footnote to royal history.

Arriving in a dark green Bentley, the 87-year-old monarch was alone: the Duke of Edinburgh was at Windsor, where he is still convalescing following exploratory abdominal surgery last month. She had previously said she was thrilled with the safe delivery of her first great-grandson, who was born at 4.24pm on Monday weighing 8lb 6oz in the private Lindo wing at St Mary's hospital at Paddington in west London.

Among other visitors received by the Cambridges was Prince Harry, the baby's uncle, who is now bumped down to fourth in the line of succession. He has previously said: "I can't wait to be an uncle."

The duchess's sister, Pippa Middleton, visited on Tuesday night shortly after mother and baby were discharged from hospital.

After presenting their newborn to the world in a photocall on the hospital steps on Tuesday, William and Kate will now seek some privacy. After the Queen's visit, the duke, duchess and infant prince left Kensington Palace for Bucklebury, Berkshire, where the Middletons have a manor house.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said: "This is now a private and quiet time for them to get to know their son." Details of the meeting with the Queen, therefore, are unlikely to be made public.

No, actually I'm not surprised . . . Considering his place in the line of succession . . . it would have to be more conservative. Now the next baby will have more latitude I'm sure . . .

I'm just happy that they are all doing so well.

As a child I watched the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth on the TV . . . so even though I'm not English . . . she will always be MY Queen . . .

Craig (twinstuff) So can a Royal watcher on this board answer this question for me? When Prince Charles one day becomes the King of England to succeed Queen Elizabeth, will he be King Charles? I thought I read somewhere he might also be named King George which would make him King George VII.

Craig, my understanding is that he can call himself what he wants but this is an article which discussed this in part:

Charles denies planning to reign as King George

Clarence House yesterday issued a pained denial of claims that the Prince of Wales has held private discussions with "trusted friends" about the possibility of reigning as George VII rather than risk the negative connotations attached to the name King Charles.

The only British monarch to have been publicly tried and executed for treason is Charles I, beheaded in Whitehall at the end of the civil war in 1649. His clever, cynical son, who reigned as Charles II, is as much remembered for his lively love life as for his achievements.

The last of the would-be Stuart monarchs, Bonnie Prince Charlie, was known to some as Charles III.

He badly let down his Jacobite followers during the 1745 rebellion against the Hanoverian dynasty whose heir - with a non-German rebranding as Windsor - Prince Charles is.

Officially the Prince's office said yesterday: "No decision has been made and it will be made at the time."

This is a formula which tactfully acknowledges that the Queen is in excellent health at 80 and that the Queen Mother only recently died at 101.

Privately senior officials were scornful of a page one Times headline on Christmas Eve which declared: Call Me George, Suggests Charles.

Claiming to be based on "many conversations" between the prince and close friends it quoted one as explaining that "the name Charles is tinged with so much sadness".

One such friend told the Guardian: "Anyone who knows the Prince of Wales knows he does not sit around talking to his chums, discussing what he wants to be called. Inasmuch as officials have discussed it with him at accession planning meetings the thinking was that he would remain Charles."

Only last week a Fabian Society pamphlet reinforced complaints from the political right that British history is badly taught in school, with too much emphasis on Henry VIII and the Nazis.

So Prince Charles's "friends" may have been over-sensitive in worrying that many voters would know that Charles I suffered the ultimate form of ejection from the Big Brother House or that the bloke who so successfully chatted up Nell Gwynn - something of a chav in her time - was also a Charlie.

But the prince is famously introverted about his image as he waits patiently for the sad event which will finally give his life its declared purpose, provided he outlives his reigning parent as many princes of Wales have not, including Henry VIII's elder brother Arthur.

Marrying Arthur's widow, Katherine of Aragon, caused Henry more trouble than any of his "trusted friends" spotted at the time, an oversight which cost several of them their heads.

Prince Charles can also be pretty tough on friends who let him down, for instance by gossiping to reporters.

He is also called Arthur - Charles Philip (after his Greek father) Arthur George to be precise. As in the 15th century, Arthur is a symbol of resurgent national feeling which might not go well with Britain's EU allies.

In any case, the country's only other King Arthur is generally regarded as a hard act to follow.

For an image-conscious monarch in search of brand strength that leaves the Hanoverian Georges, a mixed bunch who range from George III who lost America and his own marbles to George IV, a rake, and George V, who was privately virtuous but a fierce parent who boasted that he would make his children as frightened of him as he had been of Edward VII.

One possible result was that his own Bertie stammered all his life, but grew into public affection for staying in London during the Blitz and marrying a smart woman.

Royal name changes are not without precedent.

Both Edward VII and George VI were privately known as Bertie. Edward VIII was known as David.

And if the Queen and her husband had not been royal they would have been Phil and Betty Glucksberg.
