I was one of the people to vote for Gameboard of the Gods for book of the month. I have had it on my "to read" shelf since before it was released. I was so excited! Well, I've read it. It is so unlike anything else Mead has written. It's not bad...after a while I found it quite enjoyable. It was just a lot to take in. The world is very complex and there is so much for the reader to learn in order for it to make sense and for the comfortable reader flow to start happening. I did enjoy the main characters Mae and Justin. Mae was my favorite! I liked her from the start and then even more after learning a bit of her history. This book was a surprise but I liked it overall.
I finished it a few days ago. Sad to say, I was a bit disappointed. I liked it, but expected to like it quite a bit more. I thought some elements of the setting were intriguing, but was candidly less than convinced by others. Perhaps this will work itself out in later books? And the novel itself seemed padded with a lot of extraneous scenes. I'm thinking in particular about the sexual antics, which seemed neither all that relevant to the story nor candidly all that well-written. Almost like Mead had been brow-beaten by an editor into -- ahem -- inserting them into the story every fifty to seventy five pages or so.
Yeah, the sex scenes also struck me as a bit on the graphic side. Which candidly normally wouldn't bother me, as long as I saw how they made sense in advancing the plot. Just didn't see that to be the case here. Ditto the strong language. (view spoiler)
One kind of curious thought I had after finishing: How would I have ranked/liked the book had it been written by anyone else BUT Richelle Mead? Perhaps my expectations were simply too high to be sustained? Impossible to say for certain, but, yeah, I was looking forward to it.
I guess this is yet another series I'll be in for the duration on, but I also can't see it as being one I'll be in any huge rush to keep up with.
I finished the book yesterday or so. It was the first book I had read by Richelle Mead so I didn't have any prior expectations. I must admit I wasn't sure where the story was going in the beginning. It did require a lot of set up, but I wound up really liking this novel. I think it was really unique to place a fantasy novel on top of a sort of science fiction world- but that also made it require more of the set up.
There are some small things that annoyed me, but still I want to read the next books in the series. :)
I'm about a hundred pages into the book. I really like it so far. I'm especially a fan of Justin... yes, he's an arrogant bastard but still, can't explain my attraction. *sigh*

Happy reading!
