I'm trying to pick a book that I've got, have yet to read, but also trying to steer away from sci-fi.It's not working.
So, here's a suggestion. Feersum Endjinn, by Iain M. Banks. This is a bit quirky in the way it's written, and some people find it a struggle as one of the characters speaks phonetically. Read the first few lines of this review first. If you can handle that, and the fact that ~25% of the book is written like it.. then we could try this next?
I'll admit that I've tried starting it a couple of times, but failed. The same with Riddley Walker - but I'll suggest that book at a later date!

I read 'Knife of Never Letting Go' by Patrick Ness and that was written phonetically, but in a simpler way than that....seems interesting though! :D
I want to suggest The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. I've had it on my shelf forever and really want to get round to it :)
Hi Charlotte - Gargoyle looks interesting, I'd certainly go for that (take that as a 'second').. I've also now got my eye on Knife of Letting Go. Hmm.. thanks for that.. it's not as if I've got too many books to read already! ;)

And I'm glad you second The Gargoyle, it'll be put up for the vote starting soon on the 18th I think....Jen usually does this kind of thing lol
I would like to suggestThe Japanese Devil Fish Girl by Robert Rankin - this is supposed to be a sequel to War of the Worlds :)
I've just used a random generator to pick the Guardian Must Read book for this month and the number chosen was 129.
This is Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, I've never heard of it but it sounds quite interesting from the reviews.
