Faceless question

How hard should an author push to get his/her book noticed? In this age of self publishing and self promotion when does an author become obnoxious in their effort to get readers.
I feel so self serving and so guilty everytime I make a post on my own behalf. On the other hand I try to help other authors promote their books whether or not they reciprocate.
