I always had an impression that Chaos people are better sorcerers (and Merlin is a shape-shifter to boot) while Amber people are better sword-fighters (one word: Benedict).
That is very true.
Here's the ...but...
;)
Dworkin had a conversation with Corwin in an earlier book that indicated that the red heads of the family (at least) had the ability to learn sorcery.

Now that you mentioned it, I seems to recall Delwin and Sand from Amber are sorcerers. I am not sure about their heir color. They only appear briefly in one of the last short Amber stories.
Oooh......I still have to read those. Generally, I don't care for short stories, but for Amber.....
:)
Now, if I can find the book....

Manna from Heaven has them all as well as last short sci-fi stories from The Master. Amazon is your friend.

Doorways is good. Manna from Heaven worth $30 in my opinion. It will make you feel very sad for early death of Zelazny.

Merlin is a true sorcerer and has a lot of knowledge that Corwin never learned (had interest in?).
Or maybe the author is "learning" more about this world as well.
