The January Fantasy Theme: Emerging Authors

Not your typical fantasy novel, but I nominate The Manual of Detection by Jedediah Berry. It sounds like a crossbreed between Jorge Luis Borges, Dashiell Hammett, and Terry Gilliam's Brazil.
I'd like to nominate The Displaced Detective: The Arrival by Stephanie Osborn. A wonderful beginning to an outstanding series.

I will second The Manual of Detection. This is a tricky category to nominate in. I have been looking around but haven't found anything yet that really fits the criteria. I also noticed that Stephanie Osborn is showing 18 actual novels so I think she probably doesn't fit.
I think this fits the critera:Prince of Thorns , by Mark Lawrence.
Looks to be the first in a series that now has 2 books, and I don't think he has anything else out novel-wise?
Donna, Osborn does look like she has too many books but some listed here on Goodreads it appears she's one author in an anthology, so I wasn't going to count those .... a single short, to my mind, shouldn't count the same as a novel or a collection. But, most of her books appear to be Science Fiction and it does look like she has more than 4 ....
I'm going to nominate Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed. This is a swords & sorcery set in a world based off the Middle East instead of Europe ...
I also have a second book in mind, but I don't want to be piggy before seeing what else everyone comes up with :-)

I'll second Throne of the Crescent Moon.
if short story collections are allowed then I nominate Jagannath
Its available as an ebook from places like Weightless books - even if it does not seem to be available as an ebook on Amazon. There has been plenty of love shared about this collection so I am very tempted to read it and think it would be good for discussions.I was also tempted to nominate -
which also looks interesting. Alif the Unseen also looks worth a shot although given the writer has done some comics and wouldnt meet the criteria if these all counted as separate titles.
I found Jagannath on amazon so it's in: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009FPQXJ8/?...
Looking at them, The Honey Month looks interesting but less up our usual alley - which may or may not be a bad thing.
Alif the Unseen is on my kindle now and one I've had my eye on for a long time but never started reading, so I'd be really easy to convince to allow it on the list. :) She has 2 books but about 6 graphic novels and she's a journalist so she's fairly established as a writer and I may not have an unbiased opinion.

must just be the UK in which Jagganath is paperbook only on amazon (its available through other suppliers though). I have honey month on my tablet - will get round to reading it soon and will talk about it if I really like it.
I'll nominate The Dark Thorn by Shawn Speakman, which is a out of print book because it was published by a small publishing compamy, but it is available everywhere as a ebook for the price of a mass paperback.

I would second Alif the unseen

I would put the book on the list but, to be fair, I don't have a compelling reason why a graphic novel shouldn't count as a book. We're all geek enough to split that hair so someone split it for me. :)
Or we save it for a Non-Western culture Theme ....

I'll second "The Dark Thorn", just for the fun (?) of having two books with "Thorn" in the title to confuse things.
I've had my eye on The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern for some time, so I'm going to toss it into the ring .... :)

In my mind, when I added this theme to the list of possible themes back in the mists of time, my intention was to focus on up and coming new authors ... I did some research around the interwebz for a more complete definition based on writing contests, publishers, journals, etc. and most have a requirement that the author has previously published, some include peer review and criticism and some require novels when others count short stories, blogging and journalism.
So, I decided that our requirements to count as an Emerging Author:
1. The author will have published between 1 and 4 novels or short story collections (after 4, I'm thinking you're established)
2. The author is currently writing (so their latest should be no more than 2 years old)
3. The author has published as least one book through an established publisher whether small or large (I'm not discounting indies but I think this is good as there is also an 'Indie Author' theme in the list ....)
I'm open to conversation about these guidelines and if you want to sell me on an author or a book, you're welcome to it as I'm interested in finding great options to vote on more than I'm interested in following rules. Also, I may waive the 1 nomination per person rule listed below for this one round as some of us read more new authors than others ...
Remember our few rules:
1. They must be available as an ebook
2. One nomination and one seconding per person
3. No nominating your own book and
4. Mods can veto a nomination if they decide the book doesn't fit ... :-)
And, as always, authors selected in the past 12 months may not be nominated. For a list, you may check here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
