I definitely have favorite movies that I rewatch on Halloween, but since I don't reread many books, usually each Halloween I want to read 'new' scares, lol!

Actually,I don't think I've found a better author for writing genuinely creepy ghost stories than the children's/YA author Mary Downing Hahn! I totally loved The Old Willis Place,Wait Till Helen Comes: A Ghost Story and Time for Andrew: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn ,and I'm in the mood to read some of her others. The Haunting Of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, did nothing for me,but now The Woman In Black was pretty good and so was The Man In The Picture both by Susan Hill.

Oh I so agree! This is one book that I have re-read,and he can really draw you into the scene,so much so that you can feel the crisp fall air and hear the leaves swirling in the breeze, lol!

Tamara Philip (tamara_philip) | 16 comments YES!!!! honestly that book is like epitome of fall in its descriptions. When I read it I was sitting in the airport in the middle of the caribbean and I had to put a sweater on!!1 it was lovely. and then it scared my socks off LOL

Terri (terricb) | 5 comments I agree! Something Wicked This Way Comes is a perfect Halloween read!

Another fabulous classic novel for Halloween is Dracula by Bram Stoker. It's amazing.

If you like vampire novels, I'd recommend The Historian. It's quite creepy as well, but it is really long.

I also loved The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, the YA fiction story of a boy raised by ghosts in a graveyard.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is a good one...a bit slow moving, but quite creepy.

I also liked The Headless Cupid which is quite creepy, even though it is for younger readers.

I'd love to hear recommendations from others.

Halloween is my favorite Holiday, probably because fall is my favorite time of year by far,but I also think it is the most fun holiday... free of all the stress of Christmas and the horrible weather for all of us who don't live in the SW or other mild climate areas.

Except for SWTWC I haven't read any of those titles Terri, not even Dracula! Will have to check them out, thanks! :]

I loved The Presence by John Saul [also his Nathaniel]and House of Dark Shadows/Watcher in the Woods (Dreamhouse Kings, #1-2) by Robert Liparulo by Robert Liparulo, Ruined (Ruined, #1) by Paula Morris , Rippler (Ripple, #1) by Cidney Swanson , The Man in the Picture by Susan Hill ,and I love several YA by Mary Downing Hahn~ The Old Willis Place by Mary Downing Hahn , Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn , Deep and Dark and Dangerous (A Ghost Story) by Mary Downing Hahn .

Tamara Philip (tamara_philip) | 16 comments Terri, I agree about the Headless Cupid being very creepy even though its technically a children's book. I'm still wary of it nearly 20 years later!

Becky Lawyer | 106 comments Yes, the Headless Cupid is very good. The Egypt Game Is very good, with part of it taking place during Halloween. And A Wicked Way to Burnis also a good historical mystery (takes place at the beginning of the Revolutionary War in New England), with great atmosphere.

The1selectioner | 38 comments Anyone here a fan of/heard of Shannen Crane Camp? She's a clean fiction writer. I'm fan of hers. She recently published a ghost story, called Parrish. The book is described as Tim Burton meets Scooby Doo. I have not read the book myself. Still, you guys might want to look into it.

Have not heard of her, but I love a good ghost story.
Will be watching for reviews of Parrish.

The1selectioner | 38 comments Hey, I was wondering if you guys read a book a month as a group, like a traditional book club? If so what's this months? Also another possible Halloween read is Twilight. I mean it's got vampires and werewolves in it and it's also having it's tenth anniversary this year. Not to mention the first three books are clean! And if any of you are interested in Parrish by Shannen Crane Camp you might want to check out the two book trailers on youtube. May give you more info. The trailers also have some cool Halloween music.

Nope, don't do book club thingys in this group, as I have never had any interest in reading by a schedule, or by suggested titles.

I read what I want, when I want. I often have to renew my library books the maximum 3 times for three weeks each renewal, just to get them read by the due date, because I decide that recently picked up titles sound more interesting than the ones due back soon, or I've been busy watching DVDs or playing games on my PC or Kindle Fire, or socializing with friends/family lol!

The1selectioner | 38 comments My family and I read the children's classic Bone Soup by Cambria Evans every year on Halloween. We love it!

Becky Lawyer | 106 comments I've never read that. I'll have to look into it.
