Thanks Adrienne for being on the ball!

I suppose it's time that we get back to reality in Jan after all the craziness of Dec... what's your pick for Contemporary

Since 9 of my 12 Scattershelves books are on the list, I'm going to start there. But there are dozens others on the shelf that I'd like to read, so there's no telling what will happen as the month goes on.

Recessional
Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac
Captain Alatriste
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
State of Wonder
City of Fallen Angels
My Antonia
The Blood of Flowers
Murder at the Vicarage

LynnB | 1774 comments Only 3 of my Scattershelves books are on the list, but I'll start with those:

Voices
The God of Small Things
The Accidental Tourist

Two books I plan to read for another group:
Nobody's Fool
The Moonflower Vine

Candiss (tantara) I'm so glad I can "do" this shelf. Last month went all wonky for me, and I just couldn't fit another book in.

I'll be reading:

White Teeth byZadie Smith
Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons

Tara | 742 comments I am definitely going to try to get to Tell the Wolves I'm Home.
Then I may just see what books I can fit in from the shelf later. It seems to be I have a Sarah Dessen book I have to read for a challenge that should fit as well.

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 339 comments I'm going to go for:

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4) by J.K. Rowling

and maybe

Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins

I see that My Sister's Keeper is on the list. I will try to read that one as I have been wanting to read it for a long time.

I also found 4 on my Scattergories Shelf plan:
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Practical Magic
The Ocean at the End of the Lane
Article 5

Not sure I will get all of these read, but I certainly will try.

Some interesting books on this shelf! I would've thought Contemporary would refer to setting of book -but if HP & Catching Fire & Allegiant etc are on this shelf... do you think Contemporary then refers more to publication time?

message 12: by Coralie (new)

Coralie | 1658 comments I think everyone has a different definition for their own shelves. If I had a 'contemporary' shelf I would probably only shelve books on it that didn't fit anywhere else.

I'm looking at my book list for challenges and hope to read these 'Contemporary' books:

Allegiant -really just have to finish this trilogy
The New York Trilogy (LOST)
The Amazing Adentures of Kavalier & Clay (SS)
Me & Rory McBeath (Moving Mt)

Sandy | 14 comments In addition to The Life of Pi, I've added Song of Bernadette, Me Before You and the Perks of Being a Wallflower from my want to read list.....

The Contemporary shelf seems to be a mash-up of books that have been recently published, or recently made into movies...or deal with current social problems in the collective consciousness...think bullying, etc.

LynnB | 1774 comments I'm starting The Moonflower Vine which, although it's on the Contemporary shelf, is set in the early 1900's and was written in 1962. It sounds very promising and has a 3.89 rating on Goodreads. It has been "rediscovered" and has been making a comeback.

lol- Charity, you're welcome to read them through the year but I thought to let you know that this is January shelf so it was meant for our reads in January :) Our February one is up.

not to worry, just thought I should bring that to your attention so you don't think you have to read that many ;)
