Melissa (melissa2013) | 5 comments I am finally at 50 percent complete in this book! The kindle version is only 748 pages although the Goodreads one says 768 but it doesn't matter. This book is one to be taken seriously, and I find myself having to quiet everything to read it. It is a "thinker", and filled with rich prose, rich metaphors, similes, alliteration, foreshadowing, and the author is very clever in incoperating them into the piece. I find it extremely satisfying when I find something that was placed in the book, knowing that it was not placed there by accident, because every word had a purpose. I find myself highlighting using the kindle quite a bit, because there is just so much beauty in it!
One of the first quotes that I highlighted or noted is this : "The pale gold agitated in ascending waves of heat and refraction until it seemed to be place of a thousand cities, or the border of Heaven". the book is filled with imagery as good or even better than that!
We are introduced to the main characters, Peter Lake, the white horse(Athansor), Beverly Penn, Isaac Penn, Pearly Soames, The Short Tails, The Reverend, and others early. Then by the middle of the book we add several more characters. We ask ourselves who they are and why we are being introduced and then the author throws a curveball, and ties the story lines together.
One of the main mysteries of the book is this "cloud wall" which I can not figure out exactly what it is. When a character goes through this cloud wall, you are never seen again, or are you? About half way in the book, the author starts to explain this cloud wall in relation to Mrs. Gamely and Virginia, her daughter, 100 years? after Beverely Penn and Peter Lake.
I am only 50 percent there, and its a LONG book! The imagery is so beautiful. I am excited to finish so I can see if what I am imagining in my head will be the same on the big screen.

Melissa, I can see that you're really enjoying the writing in this book. Sounds very good.

It will be interesting to see the film adaptation.

Nina | 6069 comments Sadly, I can't get Winter's Tale on Netflix. We aren't doing streaming like you Joy. But, we do get some good movies or TV series so be it. Lately, I am into South Korea ones and am astounded at the beautiful clothes; even the men's. I would think I was watching a setting in Paris; rather than Seoul. Hope I spelled that right.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, the Netflix DVD of "Winter's Tale" (2014) isn't available from Netflix yet. I have it listed in the "saved" section of my Netflix queue.

The book was first published in 1983.
