I would love to hear people's thoughts on the ending of the book, especially for Peter Lake. What was your take on it? Why do you think he had to die? And what are your thoughts on the open-ending? Do you think the book actually provides an answer, or is it really up to us to decide what happens to him?

Based on some post-reading and my own two cents, I think it's a book about a reality that underlies our own which only certain individuals can see. Most of the central characters can see it to some degree, Peter Lake the most (he is a mechanic in the greater sense, understanding the mechanics of how the two realities interrelate.) There's a lot of talk about justice and good/evil eventually balancing one another. I think he had to sacrifice himself in order for the horse to fly again, and for the girl to be ressurected.
