Let's start it off with the big one. Do you think Hauptmann kidnapped the Lindbergh baby? Why or why not?

Walt | 1 comments Yes, I believe he did. My rationale:
1. The handwriting is totally conclusive, including tracing the paper which links the nursery note to all the other notes.
2. The wood evidence shows that Hauptmann did utilize a board from his landlord's attic. While it seems like a lot of work to saw a board lengthwise and then plane it down, an examination of Rail 16 reveals that is exactly what someone did.
3. The physical resemblance of Hauptmann to the persons observed by Jafsie, the cab driver, and others.
4. All of the minor evidence arguments can be easily explained away.
I also believe Hauptmann acted alone. The only open question in my mind is whether he intended to kill the baby outright or whether the baby died accidentally. If he did not intend to kill it, then someone? was recruited ahead of time to care for the baby - and that person went to their grave knowing that Hauptmann was quite guilty.
It's unfortunate that he was executed; if he had a life sentence he might have eventually confessed.
