My garden club is attending a presentation on growing and cooking with herbs on April 22nd. I hope to learn new ways to use the herbs I already grow and maybe choose a couple of new ones to try this year.
A child told me I could grow romaine lettuce in water. I've got 5 started in my windowsill. They are growing like crazy and I'd love to get them planted but we've got rain and cool temperatures here. I think I'll place them in a small pots, leave them in the window and see what happens. They are such a nice new spark of green along with the other plants.
I'm growing pumpkins, butternut squash, tomatoes and peppers. At least I threw the seeds out and they all sprung up, so now I've transplanted some of them and I'm looking after my babies. Also breadfruit, but that kind of grows itself. My friend is giving me some basil plants in the next week or two.
This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you!My husband recently built me a planters box, 18'L x 2' W x 20"D, that is pretty much going to be my new vegetable patch. We are going to order a few yards of a vegetable garden soil mix to be delivered. Since it has taken us a while to settle into our new house, I don't yet have "homemade" compost to add. Does one amend a brand new soil mix? We've had one raised bed before, but it was ornamental and not nearly as deep.
Thank you!
Herbs have do there bit and have been cut down for the winter apart from the lemon verbena which i have took cuttings from, which i will soon overwinter in the greenhouse. I cut down my lavender but i think its died, mine dont do that well in pots but there more convenient for me that way.My cauliflower that i,ve grown for the first time this year is growing well with yhe curdes getting bigger every day.
This year I planted a wide variety of seeds but not as much as I would normally would nor as close as I hadn't really grown anything in 2013 so I was a little rusty.I planted Cosmic Purple Carrots, Black Turtle Dry Bush Beans, Kentucky Wonder Snap Pole Beans, Red Romain Lettuce, Basil (Lettuce, Cinnamon, Lemon), Mammoth Melting Snow Peas, English Thyme, Summer Savory, Slow Bolt Cilantro, Bouquet Dill, and more in a 200 square foot or less garden.
I,ve thought of growing purple carrots but i,ve wondered do they keep there colour when cooked? An old gardener i was talking to said he grew purple green beans but they cooked green.I did well with small round carrots in pots.
I have cooked the purple carrots and I do not recall them changing color because of the heat but it's been a while since I cooked them as I primarily eat them raw and/or in salads. But I do recall that when cooking purple pole beans them turning green.
Thank you for your comment, i think i will try and grow some next year. They must look great grated on salads, though i liked my carrots roasted as well.
I don't really grate anything anymore (not since the 80s) but they do look good on salads! I have a recipe that I will be posting later that uses the Cosmic Purple Carrots.I have never roasted carrots but that does sound interesting.

I love roasted carrots as well as asparagus. Seems to really enhance the flavor.
