I think it's a girl in the book. She is nervous about practicing for her test by the council and passing. She learns about the first AI and how the humans decided it needed to be destroyed. But it escaped. The twist at the end was that they were a completely AI society. I think she failed her test? She may have had too many human characteristics? I'm not sure. She had an assigned mentor. It's a bit vague. Sorry.
