Jess, was it a picture book (like A Ruined House by Mick Manning) or a longer chapter book with mostly words?

It’s about this guy who’s traveling through the woods (I can’t remember why, on some sort of adventure, possibly homeless) but he finds this massive house with a garden. I think he had nowhere else to stay, so he goes into this house and it’s abandoned. There was something, I think, about him thinking there were people watching him in the trees.
Anyway, he ends up in this massive kitchen and he finds beeswax candles, and he starts a fire in the kitchen and stays there the night, before beginning to explore in the morning. The cover, I think, had a bunch of leaves on it and the name House Of Leaves comes to mind, but I know that's not the book title. I think it might be similar to that, though. I don't think it was set in modern times, possibly as early as the 1800s?
The book had some eerie undertones, again going back to the guy's paranoia about feeling watched, and that the house was in pristine condition despite being abandoned.
