message 1: by Guin (new)

Guin (guin_r) One of my favorite books is "Mama Day" by Gloria Naylor. I really like how she drew me into the book as if I was one of the characters. The entire time I read the book it felt as if I was sitting at the table having coffee with one of my good girlfriends.

message 2: by Monique (new)

Monique | 10 comments This is such a hard choice, but atm my favorite book is the Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.

message 3: by Preston (new)

Preston My favorite book is The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino because it is magic realism but it draws the reader so far into the world of the main character that everything seems quite natural and totally normal even though it is a very strange life that the baron lives in the trees.

I like it because the Baron at a young age sets himself apart from others and lives a life that is very unusual but better for him than any other life because it suits his innate character.

Perhaps my affinity for the baron comes from me feeling very different at a very young age and going on to live a life that is becoming more mainstream but to me is quite different from the normal view of how things should be

I, much like the baron, believe I and a few others are right and the rest of the world is all wrong. May my life be as long and full and fulfilling as Calvino's Baron.

The only thing wrong with this book is that the baron is a flaming heterosexual ;)

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige. I like what Danielle Paige did with the Land of Oz, how she completely turned everything around and the main character's fight to discover who she is.

message 5: by David (last edited Mar 30, 2015 10:14PM) (new)

David Rose ONE favourite? You have to be kidding. There at *least* ten I couldn't choose between, and quite possibly twenty if I gave it some thought.

Off the top of my head:
Skallagrigg
Winter's Tale
Hello Summer, Goodbye
Dune
Jennie
Rimrunners
The Paladin
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings
My Friend Flicka (will NEVER watch the movie OMG how could they DO that?)
I Start Counting
On Basilisk Station
and lots more - and I mean these are books I'll go on re-reading for the rest of my life.

message 12: by Sanya (new)

message 13: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Hands down: The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales by Oliver Sacks

This book was my inspiration to go into psychology. It is non-fiction but the case studies (that read like short stories) are mindboggling.

Now for fiction... there are so many:

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #1) by Douglas Adams
Howl's Moving Castle (Howl's Moving Castle, #1) by Diana Wynne Jones
The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories by Tim Burton

There are so many I love, but those are the books I will read again and again.

Good motivational book to encourage you to take a step in the direction of your goals and that what you are going through is temporary.

message 50: by Stuart (new)

Stuart The Godfather by Mario Puzo - I must have read this six or seven times and I can never put it down!
