The Mystery, Crime, and Thriller Group discussion

Nominations are now open for the Nov / Dec Group Read. You may nominate a book between now and Nov 9th. Voting will start the 10th and will run through the 13th. Once a winner is decided, threads for the group reads will be posted.

General rules for Group Reads nominations:

1) Important: If your nomination wins, you will be the discussion moderator. Please do not nominate a book unless you're willing to do this. NOTE: If a book you've nominated in the past won and you did not participate in the discussion, we will NOT consider your nominations in the future. Sorry to be hardcore on this, but it's happened a few times now within the last year.

2) One (1) nomination only per person. (You don't have to second nominations, all approved nominations will be added to the poll)
Please read this next sentence carefully: Neither self-nominations by authors nor nominations by their respective publishers or publicist will be accepted.

3) Do not cheat or manipulate results. It is not acceptable to create fake accounts to nominate books or vote in polls and it is not acceptable to invite people to the site for the sole purpose of nominating a book or voting for a book in a poll. It is not acceptable to ask for votes or influence the poll in any way. If the moderators feel that a group read poll has been manipulated, the book in question will be disqualified. If the moderators feel that the user(s) are fake accounts, these will be reported to Goodreads for further review.

4) Please do not repeat an author we have read in the last year. Check out the group bookshelf here https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...... if you're not sure.

5) For your nomination please include Title, Author and Link (Use the "add book/author" link at the top of the comment box).

6) Since we are an international group, please check to make sure the book is readily available in more than one format. The last thing we want is to nominate a book that no one can get.

7) Finally, a word about series - Please consider whether the book you are nominating would be best read by someone who has read all the previous books in the series, or if it can be enjoyed by someone new to the series too.

Have fun! The last few months have seem some great books selected that has resulted in lots of discussion. I hope this continues. Oh, you might want to consider winter/ Xmas / holiday themes for your nomination, but don't feel you have to limit yourself.

I'd like to nominate The Cartel by Don Winslow

This can be read as a stand alone... It's not listed as in a series. I did read The Power of the Dog and loved it. This also made it on the 2015 Goodreads Choice Awards voter list. I have the audiobook and am hoping to start soon. I know when I read Power of the Dog, I was DYING for someone to talk to about it, and I'm sure this one will be the same.

Been wanting to revisit this. Would give me a good reason to do just that.

Has the group read any Dennis Lehane recently? I'd like to suggest The Drop. This book was made into the last movie that James Gandolfini played in.

It's a classic! I know I absolutely loved it nearly 20 years ago but I was in my late teens then. Been wanting to read it again for awhile now and see what I think of it.

That is an awesome book! Kept me up all night because I soo wanted to finish it so I didn't sleep- but that was because I had an early flight the next day lol

I'll second Hunger games 2: catching fire. I've already read the series and despite my previous prejudices absolutely loves them. Hence, wouldn't mind revisiting this book.

I'd also be up for this book as I have read the first part of the series and would like to mock down the next two parts before the last part of the movie release leaves theatres....

Does The Hunger Games really count as a mystery or thriller? In my mind, it's fantasy/ Young Adult...

I agree.

It is Young Adult, but it's also been "shelved" as Thriller by 555 people on Goodreads. So I guess it depends on your definition of thriller.

I personally thought it was a great book (but then I like YA).

I thought the first book was most entertaining and I'm looking forward to reading book 2. But I think I'm going to rule that Catching Fire doesn't really fit into our genre; Mystery/ Thriller/ Spy, etc. I hope you don't mind, Sonya and that you might have another book in mind to nominate.

I second the Graham Greene book. Haven't read him in ages, would love to revisit.

I actually agree Bill, it doesn't much fit in to the category.

For people who would like to group read it, Zeljka in the Books 2 Movies group, has made threads initiating group participation for both books and movie viewing categories. Maybe people could check those out. :)

I would also love to read a Graham Greene book. Unfortunately, I read Our Man in Havana fairly recently so would prefer another of his books.

Thanks for that suggestion, Amy. Sorry, Tom, but Our Man in Havana was the nomination this time. I've been making my way through his books and buying some of his original works. I'm enjoying exploring his books.

I would like to nominate the Hanged Man's Noose. My sister's bookclub read it and loved it. Said it kept them guessing up until the end.

We did indeed, ML, but it was over 4 years ago. That's why I left it in. There may be enough new people since that that it will be fresh for them.
