I have fellow Women Writing the West member Linda Johnston on my blog at the moment discussing The Role of Newspapers in Kansas Territory. It's a fascinating bit of history and there's a giveaway to boot--one print copy of Linda's Hope Amid Hardship: Pioneer Voices from Kansas Territory to someone who leaves a comment. Please make her feel welcome! http://andreadowning.com

Andrea, thanks for the lead to the Kansas newspaper piece. (Kansas being grandfather's 1880s birthplace.) When I saw your discussion headline, my first thought was whether it might be time to reread Richard Wheeler's trilogy about newspapering in the American West.
Then, seeing your life location sequence, I wondered if you might have read Bill Bryson's Lost Continent.
