It's exactly as you pointed out, the "fall from innocence" bit was the thing that made it all special. For me, what was brilliant was the touch of gradual tragic realization for the characters that the times of sheer happiness and irresponsibility are coming to an end. The clash of childhood and slowly approaching adult life which I can relate to very fondly.

Not your typical Steven King story, right?
There's no doubt Stand By Me (The Body) is a timeless classic. For me, the reason is simple: coming of age. It's rare to find a story that captures more authentically what it means to be caught between a kid and a young adult!
I love the comradery and the dialog between the 4 main characters.
Stand By Me/The Body inspired me to write my own coming of age story, LootLoot.
