It's time to start our second year of reading together!

Here we go with January's selection...I can't wait to hear your thoughts. I'm not planning to start until the New Year but I know the early-birds are already between the covers.

Please let us know your thoughts as you finish up and any discussions questions you'd like to incorporate into our monthly live chat, enjoy!

message 12: by Nikole (new)

Nikole (victryangel619) I just received the e-book from my library and can't wait to start. This will be my first time participating in the book club and this is the perfect book for me to start.

message 13: by Natasha (new)

Natasha This is my first time participating in Book Club and I am so excited! I have been lacking in my personal reading over the past couple of years because all I've been reading is research related to my dissertation topic! I am forcing myself to read some leisure books to clear my head from all of the research! This is an awesome book to start the new year! I've read parts of the book but not the entire thing. Happy reading!

message 16: by Emily (new)

Emily I've just joined and haven't been part of a book club before so this is exciting! I already have this book but didn't finish it, found it a bit overwhelming but I'm ready to give it another go :)

I already read this earlier in December, I should have looked at the list... Either way it's fresh in my mind so i'll have something to contribute at the end of the month :)

Janet (janet54) | 1 comments I just picked it up at B& N too. I have it on Kindle but when I saw it was 30% off I grabbed it, as I like to mark up non fiction books that I think I may refer back to. Looking forward to this!
Lisa inspired me to plan my year of reading as well. I had never done that before. Loved it! Made me think as I went through my TBR pile.

message 33: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn Krna | 11 comments I really enjoyed reading this book and it was really thought-provoking, though a bit too "zen" for my taste on occasion.

I have already pared down some of my possessions based on her suggestion that we only keep the things that "spark joy" in us. I'm excited to continue to tidy up and get organized. I think that a lot of her tips were beneficial to me.

The quote that spoke to me the most was: "No matter how wonderful things used to be, we cannot live in the past. The joy and excitement we feel here and now are more important.”

message 34: by Jessie (new)

Jessie (jllb) | 2 comments I think this book is going to be one that people either love or hate.

I aspire to being a minimalist and believe in zen-philosophy, however I suck at it. I appreciate the author's approach and some of her recommendations will work for me and some will not.

Points I get:
- Once I got all of my like items together, it was shocking how much stuff I have! Does anyone really NEED seventeen pairs of scissors!?!
- Purging those items that do not spark joy IS indeed liberating.
- Organizing with things at home (shoe boxes, etc) is so much better than purchasing expensive organizational units.
- You really do have to touch something before you can decide if it sparks joy. Looking at the books on my bookshelf did not help. I had to physically take all of the books down off the shelf and hold each one, then make the conscious decision to put the book back on the shelf, or send it to a better life. This is the only way I could do it!
- Organizing your living space does change your entire outlook on life.

Things I struggled with:
- Folding my clothes in such a way that I can line them up in my drawer so they don't tumble over. At first it looked great, but each time I get a shirt out, and they all tumble over, it makes me crazy. I can't get my t-shirts to line up in such a fashion. HELP!
- Getting rid of photos... period.
- Doing it all at once. Yikes! This will be a long process for me.

My favorite quote was, "When we really delve into the reasons for why we can't let something go, there are only two: an attachment to the past or a fear for the future."

Enjoy!

message 35: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyexiled) I'm having trouble with the folding, too. I feel like there's something about it that I'm just not quite getting. I do like being able to open a drawer and see at a glance what is in there, but it's definitely easier to do with certain items of clothing and nearly impossible with others. Or maybe my drawers are just too big/deep? I'm not sure.

message 36: by Micheal (new)

Micheal King | 1 comments I struggle a great deal with pictures. So many memories! I just don't want to throw them away. What if I want to look back at stages of my children's life.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! 8-)

message 39: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 4 comments I find it hard to get through. I usually read a book this wiz in tone to two days, but his is very repetitive and I find since my room is already at the most minimum due to my health issues I cannot connect to it. I am sure it is a wonderful book if you had a larger space.. but for me it did not resonate. I did learn how to fold my foldables, that was one good thing.

message 40: by Heather (new)

Heather | 14 comments I watched you YouTube videos on how to fold clothes the Konmari way. They were very helpful.

I felt like it was really repetitive as well Claudia! I am glad I am not the only one that felt that way. I did think she made some good advice here and there. I won't be thanking inanimate objects anytime soon for a job well done, though. >.<

Jenny (jennyexiled) Heather wrote: "I watched you YouTube videos on how to fold clothes the Konmari way. They were very helpful."

The videos definitely helped me! Thanks for the tip. :)

message 44: by Brandi (new)

Brandi | 65 comments I did not enjoy this book at all. It became a chore to read instead of enjoyable and I wasn't a big fan of her advice. Too zen & out there for me. Oh well...

message 45: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1 comments I began the sorting process this past weekend and did well with sorting my clothes, but when it came to my books I felt like I was giving away my children! I did manage to fill four boxes full and still have too many to fit on my shelves...

message 46: by Lyn (new)

Lyn I'm about halfway through after beginning to read it on Sunday evening. While I will implement some parts of what I've read so far as they make sense, there are parts that I have issues with.

I understand the logic behind doing the tidying the way that it has been laid out in the book but it just won't work so well for those battling health issues (ie chronic pain in my case).
Additionally the concept of inanimate objects (clothes, books, etc) having feeling and thanking an item before discarding it is just too out there for me.
Reality is that I've already learned I have to avoid a maybe pile when going through things and either keep or discard, but I will be implementing "do this spark joy" test.
I don't want to feel like I'm whinging about the book and want to like it more, but at present it's on track for a low rating from me.

message 47: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 4 comments Thank you! I thought I was the only one who felt that way!

message 48: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 4 comments Lyn, I so understand the health issues. I had to move back in with my parents for awhile during my chemo, so needless to say I have very few items. Although the folding of the t-shirts has been helpful. Good luck with your health.

message 49: by Lyn (new)

Lyn Finally finished the book this morning. While there are parts that I will include in my tidying process, I'm not planning on changing to do things the way that the book suggests. I almost put it down never to pick up again at the point that books were covered. Throwing away books and tearing pages out of books just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm definitely going to go through my books to figure out what is a keeper and what can be parted with, but I won't be throwing away - they are going to be donated to an organisation that does a book fair since they could still bring joy to others.

Thank you Claudia... I'm not at a minimum yet but am glad I'm not the only one who recognises that the book doesn't mesh with health issues.
