Thoughts on Battle Royale

Just interested in what people thought of this book. Was the violence too gratuitous, was the constant implied threat to every character part of what drew you in?

It's hard to see how the violence is gratuitous when it's about a bunch of people who are forced to kill each other. I suppose what drew me in was the possibility of caring for one of more of the characters and the chance of them being the next to go.

The violence was not gratuitous. I did love the "constant implied threat." By showing every death, the game seems bigger and more menacing.

The plot has been used and reworked many times-a desperate group of people are isolated and killed off one by one, but Battle Royale did it as well as anybody. The violence was intense and quite graphic, but fully appropriate to the story. I've written some horror novels myself and they have been considered quite violent by reviewers. I did not set out to write a violent story, neither, I believe, did the author of Battle Royale, it was just something essential to the tale he was telling.

i like this book why because u find an author who is killing alot of characters but can write it where u feel for each character before their deaths. i didnt mind the violence it drew me in

I thought it was nothing special (yet another dystopian kill-fest nonsense) compared to the movie by Kinji Fukasaku. But then again, Fukasaku was well known for his yakuza movies, so how did this happen, don't know... he started to film a sequel, but let's not talk about that... anyway, in the movie Kitano played this disillusioned teacher, that was nice... plus there was a real message there, unlike with the book. Yeah, I'm not a fan. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree here.

I don' t remember it being very violent, all considered. I read it the first time about 10 years ago and then I re-read it a couple of years ago. I loved the way it is written, there are many characters, you feel you get to know most of them very intimately. There is no pathos in the writing, everything is described in a very cold, factual way, but it still gave me strong emotions and made me relate. What attracted me to the book, well, I am passionate about dystopian literature, and books about youth rebellion.

So disappointingly unimpressive! Battle Royale's just bland. I saw better flair with a T. rex yodeling.
